Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - Led by a four-run fifth inning and a stellar pitching performance by senior Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J. / Central Connecticut State), the Vermont Mountaineers cruised to their first win of the season, 10-1, over the Sanford Mainers in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Saturday evening.

With the win, Vermont improves to 1-1 in the early going, while Sanford drops to 1-1.

The Mountaineers offense struck for four runs in both the fifth and seventh innings en route to the victory.

With Vermont leading 2-1 entering the top of the fifth, senior Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y. / Dartmouth) led off with a single, his second of three hits in the game. Two batters later, Roulis advanced to third when Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) singled to set the stage at first and third with one out. Smith moved to second on a defensive indifference. Two batters later, with two outs, sophomore Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) walked to load the bases. Senior catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) then connected with a two-RBI single to score Roulis and Smith to make the score 4-1 Vermont. After sophomore Brad Bennett (Rockland, Texas / TCU) walked to re-load the bases, senior Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) roped a two-RBI single down the left field line to give the Mountaineers a 6-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, Vermont sent ten batters to the plate. Sophomore Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) led off with an infield single. Two batters later, Stypulkowski and Barnett walked back-to-back to load the bases before Rosenbaum cranked a bases clearing three-RBI double to make it 9-1. He later scored on an error to conclude the night's scoring at 10-1.

Stypulkowski, who played for Sanford in 2014, went two-for-four with a homerun, four RBIs and three runs scored in his return to Goodall Park as a visiting player.

Casey Brown dealt six innings of one-run ball. He allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out two and moved to 1-0 on the summer. Sophomore Adam Seibert (West Chester, Pa. / Hofstra) earned a three-inning save. He gave up no runs, hits or walks and struck out two.

Senior Ben Wessel (Scarborough, Maine / Rhode Island) took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season. The righthander pitched four innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on five hits and one walk. He struck out six.

The Mountaineers will next play on Monday, June 8, when they travel to New Hampshire for a meeting with Northern Division foe, Laconia. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Robbie Mills Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
