Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - A dominant performance at the bats paved the way for Vermont to upend the red-hot North Adams SteepleCats, 11-1, on Saturday evening at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Mountaineers avenged two early-season losses to North Adams, who entered tonight's game on a four-game winning streak which included a 6-0 victory over Vermont just a few days ago. The home team utilized a blazing 17 hits to secure the win.
The SteepleCats struck first in the third when Joseph Porricelli found his way to third after a hit by pitch, a pass ball and a stolen base, before Sam Punzi finished the job by driving him home for the first run of the game. Vermont swiftly answered after a Cameron Chick (Rocheport, Mo. / University of Nebraska-Lincoln) single to left field that barely missed Josh Loeffler's glove allowed Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) to advance to third. Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) sealed the deal with a clean bunt that stayed inside the foul line and gave Gauthier a straight sprint home that tied the game up at 1-1.
Vermont broke through the one-run deadlock in the fifth inning when Gauthier and Chick found themselves on base again with DiLoreto up to bat. DiLoreto drove one that sailed over a leaping Porricelli at second base and out to right field, granting Gauthier and Chick the opportunity to up the Mountaineer lead.
The offensive landslide continued in the sixth as the Mountaineers piled on four more runs, first with a Chick single to left field followed by an error that allowed him to advance to third as Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook) scored. DiLoreto quickly followed up with a drive to right field that allowed Chick to score, before Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) nailed one to third base that rolled past the third baseman and enabled DiLoreto and Mountaineer newcomer Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) to score.
The home team resumed the onslaught in the following frame, tallying double-digit runs with a Gauthier double that drove Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) and Giordano home, followed by a Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) RBI as Gauthier picked up the tenth run. Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) added the fourth run of the frame when he drove home Robison to solidify the 11-1 victory.
Beau Keathley (Taylor, Mich. / Oakland University) got the win for Vermont, throwing a no-hitter in his five innings of play while striking out three of the 15 batters he faced. Tyler Hays took the loss for North Adams, surrendering seven hits and three runs while only striking out six of the 26 batters faced in five frames of play.
The Mountaineers will commence another two-game road trip, this time heading to Laconia, N.H. tomorrow, Jun. 23, to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. Opening pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m.
