Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt.- For the second time in three games, the Vermont Mountaineers topped the Keene Swamp Bats, 3-1 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Saturday.

It was a pitcher's dual all the way through, as the two teams combined for just one earned run. Vermont broke a 1-1 tie that lasted from the fifth to the eighth inning with a two-out rally in the bottom of the eighth that led them to the win.

Mountaineers starter Joe Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J./Manhattan) pitched four and one third innings, allowing one run on six hits. The righty walked nobody and struck out four. Vermont then got four and two thirds innings of relief from Joe Jacques (Shrewsbury, N.J./Manhattan) and Chandler Sedat (West Bloomfield, Mich./Indiana). The two combined to allow no runs on just one hit, striking out six and walking two.

The Swamp Bats got a solid start from Andrew O'Brien (Corona, Calif./Undecided), who pitched for seven full innings, allowing no earned runs on four hits, while scattering two walks and a pair of strikeouts.

The Mountaineers got a run in the first thanks to a sacrifice fly by Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall) that drove in third baseman Trevor Ezell (Alexander, Ark./Southeast Missouri).

Vermont's bats went quiet for the next six innings, before Ryan Fineman (Bloomington, Ind./Indiana) put down a bunt that got them back on the board. The catcher squared for what looked like a sac-bunt to move Keegan Meyn (Oklahoma City, Okla./Arkansas Little Rock) to third, but the ball was thrown away by Keene's catcher, which allowed Meyn to score and Fineman to go all the way to third. Ezell then added an insurance run, driving in Fineman with a sac fly.

Keene's offense came in the top of the fifth inning, when Brandt Stallings (Buford, Ga./Georgia Tech) hit an RBI single to drive in third baseman Garrett Christman (Noblesville, Ind./Butler). That tied the game, but was all Keene could get offensively in the contest.

Chandler Sedat got the win for Vermont, pitching three and one thirds innings, and allowing no runs on no hits, while striking out five. Taylor Goshen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Iowa Western CC) suffered the loss for Keene after coming in in relief and pitching one inning, allowing two runs (none earned) on two hits.

Vermont improves to 6-13 on the season. The Mountaineers will enjoy back-to-back days off before they'll host the Sanford Mainers on Tuesday, July 5. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
