Newport Gulls News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - The Newport Gulls defeated the Danbury Westerners in a rain-shortened game 5-3 in six complete innings on Friday night at Cardines Field in Newport. The Gulls rallied at the right time in the bottom of the fifth to score five unanswered runs to position themselves for the win as severe thunderstorms passed through Newport.

The Gulls started off slow as the Danbury Westerners jumped out early on Newport for three runs in the first four innings off of starter Andrew Gist (Georgia), who earned the win.

The Westerners were led by Giovanni Dingcong's lead-off home run in the second inning, his third homer of the season. Danbury scored again in the fourth off the bat of Coco Montes' RBI-single, and Nick Gatewood completed the rally with an RBI double, increasing the Westerners lead to 3-0.

Despite managing one hit in the first four innings, the Gulls came out swinging in the fifth, exploding for five runs on three hits and a pair of walks to take a 5-3 lead as the anticipated thunderstorms began to roll in.

Troy Dixon (St. Johns) and Charlie Carpenter (South Carolina Upstate) produced back-to-back two-RBI base hits. Dixon's single allowed Connor Kaiser (Vanderbilt) and Travis Young (Wichita State) to score. Carpenter's well-hit double down the right field line scored Cole Fabio (Bryant) and Dixon, giving the Gulls the 5-3 lead.

The rain began to fall in the top of the seventh with a couple strikes of lightning at 8:30 p.m, causing an immediate suspension of the game with the Gulls leading 5-3. The umpire crew officially called the game at 8:45 p.m. with the expectation of serves thunderstorms throughout the night.

The Gulls are back in action tomorrow night as they travel across the Pell Bridge to face the division-leading Ocean State Waves in Wakefield for a 6:30 first pitch. Following an off day Sunday, Newport will be home on Independence Day for Star Wars Night at Cardines Field, featuring a 6:35 p.m. contest between the Waves and Gulls. Gates open at 5 p.m., and fans in Star Wars costumes will be admitted free of charge.
