Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the first place Laconia Muskrats, 8-3, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) Northern Division action at Recreation Field on Friday evening.
With the win, Vermont's second straight, the Mountaineers now sit in sole possession of second place in the North, one and a half games behind the Muskrats. Laconia falls to 17-11 with the loss.
With the score 4-2 Vermont entering the bottom of the fourth inning, the team struck for four runs to take a commanding 8-2 advantage and put the game out of reach.
Centerfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) led off the frame with a well placed infield slap single. He advanced to second on the play following an error on the attempted flip to nab him at first. Second baseman Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) followed with an RBI single to make it 5-2 Vermont. After Hairston moved to second on a balk, catcher Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) walked to set up first and second with no outs. Shortstop Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) then connected on a two RBI double to left-center field that rolled all the way to the fence. Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) capped off the inning with an RBI knock to make it 8-2 Mountaineers.
Vermont held a dangerous Laconia offense to single runs in the third, fourth and sixth. The Muskrats managed eleven hits, but the Mountaineers pitching staff did a nice job scattering the Laconia offense.
Vermont scored two in the first to take an immediate 2-0 lead. Leadoff man Parenty singled and moved all the way to third on an errant throw following a flyout to center. Parenty proceeded to steal home to score the opening run of the ballgame after sliding around the tag at the plate. The Mountaineers other run in the inning came courtesy of a solo blast to left by Copeland.
In the second, Vermont added two more runs. Parenty hit a sacrifice fly and Hairston hit his first of two RBI singles on the night to score third baseman Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky. / Louisville) and designated hitter and newcomer Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan), respectively, to make it a 4-0 game.
Lefthander Tom Cosgrove started for Vermont and earned the win to improve to 3-1 on the summer. The southpaw dealt six innings, giving up three runs (all earned) on nine hits and one walk. He struck out five.
Laconia starter Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H. / Southern New Hampshire) took his first loss of the year to drop to 4-1. The lefty lasted just three innings and allowed six runs (all earned) on seven hits and four walks. He struck out three.
Teddy Rodliff (West Babylon, N.Y. / Stony Brook) worked three scoreless innings in relief en route to picking up his second save of the season. Rodliff allowed just two hits and struck out three.
Vermont returns to action on Saturday evening when the team travels to New Hampshire for a meeting with the Keene Swamp Bats. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
