Keene Swamp Bats News Release
The Sanford Mainers improved to 3-1 against the Keene Swamp Bats this season with a stellar pitching performance from starting pitcher Ben Wessel to shut down the Swamp Bats offense and help secure a 5-1 win.
Wessel threw eight scoreless innings, allowing no runs, on four hits while recording six strikeouts on 90 pitches and dominating Swamp Bats hitters throughout the night.
Cam Hatch would come in for the Mainers and allow one run in the ninth inning and put an end to the game in Sanford.
Sanford scored in five different innings for all of their five runs on the night as they chipped away at the Keene pitching staff for their victory.
The Mainers scored in the bottom of the first inning as Shane Hughes came around to score an unearned run after a single by Chris Gaetano, that lead to an error by first baseman Connor Foreman of the Swamp Bats and Sanford took a 1-0 lead.
Sanford would add another run in the second inning on an RBI single by Mainers newcomer Nolan Rogers to extend the lead to 2-0. They would add another in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Dan Hetzel after a leadoff walk to Gaetano started the inning and they took a 3-0 lead into the fifth.
They would continue the small ball play and add two more runs in the sixth and seventh innings on RBI singles by Brendan Skidmore and Dalton Thomas to give Sanford a 5-0 lead after seven innings.
Keene was unable to mount a comeback late in the game as Connor Fitzsimons scored on a wild pitch after reaching third on an error by the pitcher Hatch. Keene was held to four hits throughout the game and also committed two defensive errors.
With the loss the Swamp Bats fall to 7-18 on the season. Keene is back at home tomorrow night against Vermont, with first pitch at 6:30, before having Sunday and Monday off.
