Mountaineers Take Hold of First with Win at Laconia

LACONIA, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats, 5-4, in Friday night New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Robbie Mills Field.

With the victory, Vermont overtakes the Muskrats for first place in the Northern Division. The Mountaineers now sit at 18-13 overall. Laconia falls to 18-14.

Trailing 4-1 entering the fourth, Vermont struck for four runs to take the 5-4 lead, one they would hold onto the rest of the way.

Second baseman Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) led off the fram with a walk. Two batters later, catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Maine Orono) roped a one hop double off the left field wall to setup second and third with one out. Leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) then connected on a two RBI single to right-center, plating both runners to cut the deficit to one, at 4-3. Ruppert advanced to second on the throw home on the play and later moved up to third on a wild pitch. First baseman Simon Rosenbaum (Los Altos Hills, Calif. / Pomona-Pitzer) followed with an RBI single to score Ruppert and knot the game at four. After Rosenbaum stole second, centerfielder Austin Wilson (Valrico, Fla. / Eastern Michigan) reached on a bunt single to put runners aboard at first and third with still just one out. Rightfielder Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) reached on an infield single to score Rosenbaum and give Vermont a 5-4 edge.

Starter Damian Powers (Williamsville, N.Y. / Le Moyne) surrendered two runs in the first and second innings, but settled down and pitched well. He earned the win to improve to 2-1 on the summer. The righthander hurled six and one-third innings and allowed the four runs (two earned) on nine hits and two walks. He struck out two.

Laconia starter Josh Moore (LaGrange, Ohio / Ashland) lasted seven innings and took the loss to fall to 2-2. He gave up five runs (all earned) on nine hits and one walk. He struck out five.

Vermont reliever Sean Callahan (Colchester, Vt. / UMass-Dartmouth) pitched two and two-thirds innings of scoreless relief to get the save, his first of the season. Callahan allowed just one hit and struck out two.

The Mountaineers also scored in the second, when Ruppert hit a sacrifice fly to bring designated hitter Isaiah Pasteur (Westminster, Md. / Indiana) home. Vermont trailed 2-1 at the time.

The Mountaineers will return to action Saturday night, when they host the Keene Swamp Bats for a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Recreation Field.
