Swamp Bats Plummet 9-8 to SteepleCats In Extra Innings

July 17, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Swamp Bats would lose to the SteepleCats 9-8 in the fourth meeting tonight in a division rival game that had a lot of playoff implications attached to it. The Swamp Bats were in another back-and-forth action after last night's 10-4 loss to Danbury.

The SteepleCats got on the board first early in the 2nd inning when they scored two runs. Joe DeLuca would get things going with an RBI single and Keene would commit two errors in that inning alone. They would score again in the 3rd inning to increase their lead to 3-0.

However, the Swamp Bats would get the bats alive with 5 runs in the 4th inning including an RBI single from Mike Geannelis who started the game on the mound for Keene. He would pitch 5.2 innings and allowed eight hits and three earned runs.

The Swamp Bats would score again in the 5th inning with three runs that started with an RBI double from Shane Matheny. The SteepleCats would respond with another five runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to tie things up.

The SteepleCats had a good chance in the bottom of the 9th inning when North Adams would get a leadoff single from pinch hitter Rob Calabrese but Keene would get out of the jam.

Going to extra innings, North Adams would have runners on the corners with Victor Sorento at bat. Paul Covelle would call for the intentional walk but pitched right pass the catcher Chris Hardardt on a wild pitch call to bring home Parker Perez for the victory.

Shane Matheny would hit 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs and a walk in one of his best games of the season. Keene drops to 8-22 and will head to Vermont Saturday night.
