Mountaineers Sweep Double Header In Mystic

Groton, CT - Troy Scribner pitched a complete seven innings giving up just two runs in game one of the double header while Brian O'Grady hit a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the fifth in game two as the Vermont Mountaineers swept a double header with the Mystic Schooners in New England Collegiate Baseball League action on Monday evening.

The first contest of the day saw Scribner (Washington Depot, CT/Sacred Heart) go the full seven innings giving up two runs on three hits striking out seven and walking three. The game saw the Schooners take the lead in the bottom of the second as Gabe Ortiz stole third and advanced home on a throwing error from catcher Matt Wallenzin. Vermont would take a lead in the fourth plating two runs on and RBI single from Jeff Cammans and a sacrifice fly from Rolando Gautier. Mystic however, would tie things up in the bottom half of the inning thanks to Ortiz's RBI double.

It looked as though the game would remain tied up but the Mountaineers would explode for four runs in the fifth with one out. O'Grady (Warminster, PA/Rutgers) would hit a single before stealing second base. Brett Johnson would then hit a double to plate O'Grady and advance to third on a passed ball. Derek Jones would then lace a single to score Johnson (Little Elm, TX/TCU) followed by doubles from Rob Kelly and Greg Bachman to score Kelly (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA/Saint Anslem). Starting pitcher Matt Plate would then retire the next two batters to end the inning with Vermont ahead 6-2.

Scribner (4-0) got the win in game one of the double header while Plate (1-1) is saddled with the loss tossing five innings giving up six runs on nine hits walking two and fanning three.

Game Two again saw the Schooners take the early lead on another Ortiz RBI single to plate Hal Landers in the bottom of the third. Craig Schlitter was very effective in his outings scattering hits and walks and seemingly keeping the Mounaineers at bay. The Mountaineers would get back-to-back singles from Jones (Snohomish, WA/Washington State) and Rob Griffith. Russ Hopkins would then sacrifice the two runners over before an RBI groundout from Doug Freeman plated Jones and O'Grady singled with two outs to score Griffith (Ronkonkoma, NY/Sacred Heart). Jerome Werniuk and Spencer Jackson would combine to throw a hitless inning before Kyle Grana closed out the game in the seventh.

Starter Ryan Fasano (Stony Point, NY/Rutgers) moves to 3-1 on the year throwing five innings giving up one run on five hits walking two and striking out five. Schlitter (1-1) is given the loss going five strong giving up two runs on five hits with two strikeouts and three walks. Grana (St. Louis, MO/Bellarmine) earned his league leading tenth save of the season throwing a scoreless seventh.
