Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt - An exceptional pitching night by Tyler Thorington (Woodhaven, Mich. / Western Michigan University) could not save Vermont from a hot sixth inning by North Adams on Wednesday evening at Joe Wolfe Field as the visitors fell to the SteepleCats, 6-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The bats heated up for the SteepleCats in the latter portion of the game, as the Mountaineers could not avenge a 7-5 loss from last Saturday to North Adams.
Both teams could not muster much offense through the first half of the game as stellar pitching by Thorington and North Adams's Nicholas Payero allowed just six total hits between both teams through the end of the top of the sixth inning, before the SteepleCats finally broke through in the bottom. Andrew Pedone and Matthew Koperniak found themselves on third and second base before Scout Knotts seized the opportunity and drove both home with a double to left field. Knotts found himself advancing home after moving on to third on a wild pitch when another wild pitch soared past Straton Podaras's (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) head and gave Knotts time to make a clean streak home.
The Mountaineers could not mount a comeback before the SteepleCats made another move as the home team picked up their fourth run when Joseph Porricelli drilled a home run in the seventh. The offensive onslaught continued shortly thereafter when Knotts picked up another RBI after sending one out to left field that allowed Pedone to score his second run of the night.
An opening nearly came for the Mountaineers in the eighth, but to no avail as the squad left bases loaded. North Adams wasted no time shutting down Vermont's hopes, with Josh Loeffler nailing the second homer of the game with a hit past the left field fence to solidify the 6-0 shutout victory.
Thorington took the loss for Vermont after pitching five frames, allowing three hits which led to two runs for North Adams. Payero got his second win of the season, giving up just three hits to 21 batters while not surrendering a single walk in six innings of play.
Vermont will have a day off from action before returning on Friday evening, travelling to in-state rival Upper Valley for a 6:30 p.m. showdown.
