Mountaineers Rout Blue Sox

MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers picked up their 12th win of the 2017 season on Tuesday with a 9-3 win over the Valley Blue Sox in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Vermont held the Blue Sox, who hold the fourth highest team batting average in the league, to three runs on six hits in the contest. Mountaineers starter Grady Miller (Wenatchee, Wash./U of Portland) pitched six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. The lefty walked one batter and struck out seven. Miller picked up his third win of the season.

Vermont had seven hits in the contest and was able to capitalize with timely offense. The Mountaineers opened the game up with three runs in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively.

Vermont third baseman Ryan Hoogerwerf (Allen, Texas/U of Portland) put Vermont on the scoreboard in the fourth with an RBI double, scoring Michael Hartnagel (Brownsburg, Ind./Butler). Designated hitter Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt./Castleton) added a pair of runs later in the frame with another RBI double, scoring Hoogerwerf and left fielder Chase Grant (Carlsbad, Calif./U of Nevada Reno).

Hoogerwerf picked up his second RBI of the game in the fifth when he drew a bases-loaded walk, scoring Jake Farrell (Westwood, Mass./Northeastern) from third base. The next batter, catcher Jesse Forestell (Homewood, Ill./Western Michigan), drove in two more runs with an RBI single.

Mountaineers shortstop Patrick Frick (Greenville, S.C./Wake Forest), who is hitting .333 through his last ten games, drove in two runs in the seventh inning with a single. In the bottom of the eighth, Ben Bavly (Newton, Mass/Northeastern) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in a run, capping the scoring for the Mountaineers in the game. The RBI fly-out was Bavly's first plate appearance with Vermont.

Valley starter Garett Delano (Callahan, Fla./Brown) suffered the loss after allowing three runs (none earned) on three hits over four innings.

Blue Sox right fielder Nate Soria (Homer Glen, Ill./Xavier) scored two of Valley's three runs in the contest. Soria hit a solo homerun in the top of the fifth and scored on a sacrifice fly by Chas Hadden (Morristown, Tenn./Belmont) in the eighth. Shortstop Kyle Mottice (Massilion, Ohio/U of Cincinnati) scored the Sox's third run when he tripled and scored in the third inning.

The win marked the first time that Vermont has beaten the Blue Sox this season.

Vermont (12-14) will travel to Keene, N.H. on Wednesday to face the Keene Swamp Bats for the second time this season. The game, which begins at 6:30 p.m., can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
