Vermont Mountaineers News Release

SANFORD, Maine - The Sanford Mainers got strong pitching from starter Andrew Barnes (Rochester, N.H./ SUNY Cortland) on Monday to shut down the Vermont Mountaineers, 3-1 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).

Barnes pitched five and one third innings, allowing one run on five hits. The lefty struck out three batters and walked three. Barnes earned his first win of the year.

Mountaineer starter Jared Skolnicki (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Kent State) pitched six innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Skolnicki struck out three and walked two. The lefty suffered his second loss of the season.

The Mainers jumped out to a lead in the bottom of the third when Colby Maiola (North Reading, Mass./UMass Lowell) hit a solo home run.

In the bottom of the fourth, Justin Lavey (Kenosha, Wis./U of Louisville) hit an RBI single to center field, scoring Bryan Sturges (Houston, Texas/ TCU). The hit gave the Mainers a 2-0 lead.

Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt./ Castleton) put the Mountaineers on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth with a solo home run to right field. The homer cut Sanford's lead in half but it was all the offense Vermont could manage in the contest.

The Mountaineers threatened in the top of the ninth, putting two men in scoring position with one out but pinch runner David Sarmiento (Pembroke Pines, Fla./St. Thomas) was cut down trying to score on a wild pitch to end the game.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Mainers added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly by Ryland Kerr (Bellevue, Wa./Eastern Kentucky).

Michael Koltak (Columbus, Ohio/ Georgetown College) and Scott Creedon (Braintree, Mass./ Broward) pitched in relief for the Mountaineers. The duo gave up one run on one hit.

Vermont (11-14) will return home on Tuesday to face the Valley Blue Sox. First pitch is set for 6:30 at Montpelier Recreation field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
