Mountaineers Push Winning Streak to Six, Sweep Ocean State

June 28, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt. - Timely hitting and triumphant defensive stands led Vermont to a sweep over the visiting Ocean State Waves on Friday evening, claiming a 3-1 victory in game one before picking up a 7-6 win in game two at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.

This time trading in offense for defense, the Mountaineers allowed just six Ocean State hits across both games while tallying fourteen of their own. Those drives proved crucial as Vermont did just enough to extend their winning streak to six games, which currently stands as the longest in the NECBL.

The Mountaineers got things underway in the opening game with a two-run third inning, kicked off by a Kevin Brenning (Florence, Al. / University of North Alabama) double. Brenning finished the job while Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) was at bat after stealing third before coming home when an errant throw by the pitcher bounced past Casey Dana's glove and gave Brenning enough time to make a clean run. Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) drove Gauthier home on a single to center field to up the Mountaineer lead to 2-0.

DiLoreto picked up another RBI in the fifth frame, this time bringing in Sean Flaherty (Orangeburg, N.Y. / Hofstra University) on a hit to left field that rolled right in between the second and third basemen. The visiting Waves nearly embarked on a comeback at the last moment, picking up a run by Joe Simone after Dillon Morton got him home, but it was too little too late as the Mountaineers claimed the first game, 3-1.

Tyler Thorington (Woodhaven, Mich. / Western Michigan University) earned his second win after giving up just two hits and one walk in a little over five frames. Nick Robinson took the loss for Ocean State, allowing all four Vermont hits and three runs. Beau Keathley (Taylor, Mich. / Oakland University) got the save after a one-hit, one-run seventh inning for the Mountaineers.

Vermont wasted no time getting things started in the second game, picking up a quick run on a Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) double that allowed Gauthier to score. With Charping and Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) on base, Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) crushed one over the center field fence to pour on three more runs. The Waves promptly responded in the bottom frame, cutting the lead in half behind Garrett Hodges and Xavier Vargas runs.

Vermont collected two insurance runs, first in the fourth inning when a sacrifice fly by Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) allowed a streaking Flaherty to come home. McDermott swiftly added another RBI in the sixth, driving one to left field as Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook) scored. The Waves nearly encroached on Vermont's lead after loading the bases in the sixth frame on no outs, but Steven Acosta (West New York, N.J. / Rutgers University-New Brunswick) and the Mountaineers were able to hold firm defensively and accumulate three outs.

Climo and Straton Podaras (Glen Head, N.Y. / Radford University) sealed the deal in the final frame, with Climo finding his way to third after a triple to center field and Podaras getting him home with a quick follow-up single. Ocean State made things interesting in the bottom, garnering three runs behind Hodges, Elijah Dunham, Brendan Conley and John Cristino runs, but could not pick up the game-tying score, leaving runners on base as the Mountaineers collected the 7-6 victory.

Alec Huertas (Bethlehem, Pa. / Long Island University) acquired his first win of the season, allowing three hits and two runs while striking out four. Thad Harris suffered the loss for the Waves, surrendering five hits and five runs. Nicholas DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J. / Stony Brook University) got the save, allowing just one hit after coming in in the final inning to finish the job.

The red-hot Mountaineers have now improved to 9-7, and will look to continue their winning streak tomorrow, Jun. 29, when they travel to Laconia, N.H., for the third time this week to take on the Winnipesaukee Muskrats. Vermont has defeated Winnipesaukee twice, 7-4 and 13-4, in the last six days.

You can listen along all season long on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
