Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Keene Swamp Bats 7-6 in Wednesday night New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Recreation Field. With the win, the Mountaineers' magic number to clinch first place in the Northern Division is one game. Any combination of a Vermont win over the team's final three games of the regular season, or Sanford Mainers loss over their final five games of the summer, gives the Mountaineers home field through at least the first two rounds of the 2014 playoffs.
With the score tied at six, the Mountaineers pushed across the go ahead and eventual game-winning run in the sixth inning. Nick Solak (Louisville) led off with a triple to deep center field. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) followed with an RBI ground out to short to give the Mountaineers a 7-6 edge.
Keene did all of its damage in two innings, pushing across three runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
Vermont pushed across one run in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings. The Mountaineers offense erupted for three runs in the fifth. Ian Sagdal (Washington State) led off with a triple to left center. Mike Krische (Canisius) followed with a walk. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) grounded out to second to score Sagdal from third to make the score 6-4 Keene. Two batters later, Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) cracked an RBI single to score Krische and bring Vermont to within a run at 6-5. After a single by Trey West (Le Moyne) set the scene at first and third with two outs, Charbonneau and West successfully executed a double steal of home and second to knot the game at six.
The Mountaineers had eighteen hits as a team, with Parenty leading the way with four. Colin Lyman (Louisville), Sagdal and West smacked three hits apiece.
Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville) dealt three and one-third innings of scoreless relief and earned his first win of the summer to move to 1-1. Goss didn't allow a hit. He walked one and struck out one.
Adam Picard (UMass) earned his fourth save of the summer and second in as many nights, pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He struck out one.
Sam Triece (Washington State) took the loss for Keene, falling to 0-2 on the summer. Triece threw two and one-third innings in relief, giving up one earned run on five hits. He struck out two.
The 26-13 Mountaineers return to action on Thursday, when they travel to Maine to battle the Sanford Mainers in doubleheader action. Game one, which will begin in the fourth inning as the continuation of the suspended seven-inning game from Monday night, is set for 4:30 p.m. The second game, a full nine-inning affair, is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
