Keene Swamp Bats News Release

The Keene Swamp Bats dropped a tough one at the hands of the Vermont Mountaineers, 7-6 on Wednesday night at Recreation Field in Montpelier.

Keene is now 17-21 on the year, while the Mountaineers improve to 26-13.

With things tied at six apiece in the bottom half of the sixth, Nick Solak (Louisville) ripped a lead off triple to dead center. Solak would score one batter later as his college teammate Blake Tiberi (Louisville) grounded out to short and allowed Solak to score. The run would eventually prove to be the difference in the game.

Vermont took an early lead in the bottom half of the first as Colin Lyman (Louisville) blooped a double down the left field line, moved on third on a bunt by Solak and scored on an RBI single by Tiberi.

The Mountaineers led 2-0 after three innings as Mike Krische (Canisius) followed an Ian Sagdal (Washington State) double with an RBI infield single.

Keene took their first lead of the game in the top of the fourth, plating three runs with two outs. Robbie Coman (Virginia) continued his hot stretch at the plate and doubled to right with two outs, Brady Sheetz (Hartford) brought home Coman with an RBI single and Sheetz scored on a two-run blast by Stephen Smith (Texas Tech), his second home run in as many games.

The Mountaineers tied things up at three apiece in the bottom of the fourth as Trey West (Le Moyne) singled, moved to second on a single by Lyman, stole third and scored on a passed ball charged to Coman.

As was the case in this back-and-forth affair, the Swamp Bats promptly plated three more runs in the top of the fifth to open a 6-3 lead.

Taylor Perez (St. Leo) reached on an error to start the inning, stole second and scored on an RBI double by Zach Lauricella (St. John's). Coman plated Lauricella with an RBI single. Jarred Mederos (St. John's) who also singled in the inning, scampered home on a passed ball charged to West.

Vermont tied things up once again with three in the home half of the fifth as Sagdal led off with a triple and scored two batters later on an RBI groundout by Jack Parenty (Stony Brook). Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) brought home Krische with an RBI single and the Mountaineers executed a double steal to perfection as Charbonneau swiped home with two outs to tie the game at six and West slid safely into second.

Keene did not have a hit over the final four innings of the contest as Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville), who got the win to go to 1-1 on the year and Adam Picard (UMass) combined for 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.

Sam Triece (Washington State) was charged with the loss for the Swamp Bats, allowing one run on five hits and striking out two in 2.1 innings of relief. Triece is now 0-2.

The Swamp Bats will resume a pair of suspended games tomorrow at Alumni Field. At 2:00 p.m., Keene and North Adams continue their game in the bottom of the seventh inning tied at six with a runner at second for the Swamp Bats and a 2-0 count with two outs. Ocean State comes to town at 6:30 to resume a game from July 23, tied at one apiece at the start of the top of the second inning.
