Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest, 11-0, to the Laconia Muskrats at Recreation Field on Saturday night. With the loss and the Sanford win over North Adams, the Mountaineers have now fallen out of first place, as they sit a half game behind Sanford in the Northern Division standings.
The Muskrats wasted no time getting on the board, scoring runs in each of the first three innings.
Nick Masonia (Troy) hit a one out single in the first. Braxton Martinez (St. Louis) followed with a two-run blast to deep right center off of Vermont starter, Jim McDade (Millersville).
Laconia scored four more times in the second inning. Matt Byrne (Iona) led off with a single to left and advanced to second when the ball got by Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) after he lost it in the Sun. Ryan Sullivan (UConn) smacked an RBI double to score Sullivan with still no outs. Three batters later, Vinny Zarrillo (Rutgers) hit an infield single to score Sullivan and give the Muskrats a 4-0 lead. After Masonia was hit by a pitch to set up first and second with two outs, Martinez hit an infield single to load the bases. Colton Bottomley (Florida Gulf Coast) followed with an RBI infield single to make it 5-0 and keep the bases loaded. Chris Beall (Arizona State) was hit by a pitch to allow the fourth run of the inning to score and give Laconia a 6-0 edge.
Laconia added one run in the fourth and four more in the ninth. Beall had the big hit in the ninth, a three-run homerun to right field, to cap off the inning and put the Muskrats up 11-0.
Jack English (Florida Gulf Coast) started for the Muskrats and was very good. He gave up no runs on three hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out five and earned the win to move to 3-1 on the summer.
McDade lasted one and two-thirds innings for the Mountaineers, allowing six earned runs on seven hits. He struck out one and took the loss to move to 2-1 on the season.
The Mountaineers offense managed just three hits in the game.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday evening when they host the Mystic Schooners for a North-South matchup at Recreation Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
