MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest, 10-2, to the Laconia Muskrats at Recreation Field on Saturday night.

With the loss, the Mountaineers' third straight, Vermont falls to 5-6. Laconia improves to 7-4 to maintain first place in the Northern Division.

The Muskrats struck for seven runs in an error-filled third inning. After Vermont starter Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J./Central Connecticut State) retired the first two batters he faced in the frame, Muskrats' left fielder Brett Lashley (Lake Worth, Fla./Florida Atlantic) reached on an error by Mountaineers' left fielder Austin Clemons (Louisville, Ky./Louisville). Catcher Deon Stafford (Marysville, Pa./St. Joseph's) followed with a walk to setup first and second with two outs. After the Mountaineers committed another error, allowing first baseman Will Mackenzie (Fort McCoy, Fla./Stetson) to reach safely, Lashley scored the first run of the inning to cut the deficit in half at 2-1. 2014 returner in senior third baseman Braxton Martinez (St. Louis, Mo./St. Louis) then ripped an RBI single to score Stafford and knot the game at two. Consecutive RBI singles by Cameron Hanley (Walpole, Mass./Northeastern), Jordan Simpson (Mason, Ohio/Furman) and Ron Farley (Baltimore, Md./Delaware State) made it 6-2 Laconia. Two runs came home on the Farley hit as the Mountaineers caught the Muskrats' right fielder in a rundown between first and second. Mountaineers' second baseman Thomas Roulis (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Dartmouth) changed the course of the play after seeing Simpson break for the plate, but his throw veered by Vermont catcher Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla./Maine Orono), allowing Simpson to cross home. Shortstop Vinny DeMaria (Tarrytown, N.Y./Iona) followed with an infield single. DeMaria then was caught in a rundown during Carter Grote's (South Park, Pa./Furman) at bat. DeMaria avoided being tagged long enough to allow Farley to score the seventh run of the inning.

Laconia scored twice in the fourth and once more in the seventh.

The two Mountaineers runs came in the second inning when right fielder Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y./Northeastern) connected on a two-out, two-run blast to left.

Muskrats' left-handed starter Tim Viehoff (Derry, N.H./Southern New Hampshire) dealt six innings, allowing two unearned runs on four hits and two walks. He struck out six and moved to a perfect 3-0 on the summer.

Lefthander Brown took the loss to move to 2-1 on the season. He pitched two and two-thirds innings and gave up seven runs (all unearned) on seven hits and one walk. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday afternoon when they travel to Massachusetts for a 4:30 p.m. meeting with the North Adams SteepleCats. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
