Mountaineers Jump out Early, Hold on for 9-5 Victory

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the New Bedford Bay Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) play at Recreation Field on Wednesday night by a 9-5 final. With the win, Vermont improves to 19-10 on the season and increases its first place lead in the Northern Division standings to a game and a half over the second place Sanford Mainers.

The Mountaineers offense burst for three runs in the first inning. Colin Lyman (Louisville) hit a one out single and stole second. Two batters later, Lyman came home on a passed ball to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) reached on an error by second baseman Joey Cecere (North Georgia). Tiberi advanced to second on a wild pitch. Nick Solak (Louisville) followed with an RBI triple to right to make it 2-0 Mountaineers. Solak scored when the next batter, Rob Knightes (St. John's), reached on an error by shortstop Michael Gilbert (Southern Mississippi), making it 3-0 Vermont.

The Bay Sox answered with one in the second and one in the fourth, but the Mountaineers responded with two in the fourth. Alex Caruso (St. John's) drew a one out walk. Lyman followed with his second single of the game to set up first and second with no outs. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) came up with an RBI single, plating Caruso to make the score 4-2 Vermont. Lyman scored two batters later to make it 5-2, when Solak reached on a fielder's choice.

Vermont held a slim 5-4 edge until the eighth, when the offense erupted once again, this time for four runs. Pinch hitter Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) led off with a walk and scored immediately when Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) tripled him home. Evan Harasta (UAlbany) followed with an RBI double to open the lead up to three, at 7-4. Caruso knocked Harasta in with an RBI double. After Caruso stole third, pinch hitter Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) hit a sacrifice fly to right center to score Caruso and make it 9-4.

New Bedford pushed across one last run in the ninth, but did not threaten after that.

Mountaineers starter Elliot Ashbeck (Bradley) earned the win to move to a perfect 4-0 on the summer. Ashbeck tossed six innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks. He struck out five.

Cody Doyle (St. Petersburg) and Jared Gesell (UNCW) combined to pitch the final three innings, giving up one earned run on four hits and a walk.

Brad Labozetta (Polk State) started and took the loss for New Bedford. He dealt six innings, allowing five runs (two earned) on eight hits and one walk. He struck out four.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday night, when they travel to New Hampshire for a meeting with the Keene Swamp Bats. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Alumni Field.
