Keene Swamp Bats News Release
KEENE, N.H. - The North Adams SteepleCats have been a thorn in the side of the Keene Swamp Bats all season and tonight proved to be no different.
Ramon Valdez (Barry) hit a three run home-run to straight away centerfield in the top of the 10th inning to give the SteepleCats a 6-3 come from behind victory over the Swamp Bats.
North Adams was down to their final strike when Anthony Papio (Maryland) sent it to extra innings with a solo shot to deep right field with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to tie the score up at three. It was the third time this season that Keene and North Adams went to extra innings.
With the loss, the Swamp Bats drop back below .500 to 13-14, while the SteepleCats improve to 13-15 on the year. The SteepleCats also clinched a season series win over the Swamp Bats, winning four of their first five meetings.
The two teams face off one more time this season on July 28 at Alumni Field, a makeup of their game on July 3 that was rained out.
It was scoreless for the first three and a half innings until Ryan Summers (Louisville) got the scoring started for the Swamp Bats with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo shot to left-centerfield to put the Bats up 1-0.
Jarred Mederos (St. John's) added another run to the board for Keene with a solo shot of his own with one out in the bottom of the fifth to give the Swamp Bats a 2-0 lead. It was Mederos' second home run of the year.
Swamp Bats starter Michael Dunnigan (St. Leo) pitched a solid 5 2/3 innings but ran into trouble in the sixth inning.
The SteepleCats got on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Kyle Richardson (Notre Dame) scoring Zach Lucas (Louisville). That ended the night for Dunnigan who allowed two runs (both earned) on six hits, no walks and eight strikeouts on 76 pitches. He was saddled with a no-decision.
North Adams tied the score at two on an RBI single by Valdez plating Richardson.
The Swamp Bats took the lead right back though in the bottom of the sixth inning. After a single by Bret Dennis (St. John's) and a double by Summers, Connor Fitzsimons (Central Conn. State) doubled down the left field line scoring Dennis to give the Swamp Bats a 3-2 lead. Summers slipped on the way rounding third, preventing him from scoring from second.
That was it for SteepleCats starter, Trevor Scott (UC San Diego) who pitched six innings, gave up three runs (all earned) on eight hits, walked one and struck out three on 81 pitches. Scott also hit a batter and received a no-decision.
The Swamp Bats travel to Laconia tomorrow night to play the Muskrats in a make-up game from June 25.
