Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Mystic Schooners 3-0 in a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest at Recreation Field on Sunday evening. The win snaps Vermont's two-game losing skid and puts the Mountaineers in a tie for first place with the Sanford Mainers in the Northern Division.

Ryan Davis (Le Moyne) was the story of the game. The southpaw was stellar. He hurled eight innings, allowing no runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out four and had great command of his fastball and breaking pitches the whole night. With the win, Davis moves to 2-1 on the summer.

Jared Gesell (UNCW) pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his fifth save of the season. Gesell walked the leadoff man, but got a ground ball up the middle, allowing Brett Charbonneau (Le Moyne) and Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) to turn a pretty double play.

Mystic starter, A.J. Turnier (Southern Connecticut State) pitched well in five and one-third innings of work, but took the loss, falling to 1-2 on the season. Turnier gave up one run on two hits and two walks. He struck out four Vermont hitters.

The Mountaineers offense only managed four hits in the game, but they pushed across three runs, the first of which came in the fourth inning. Alex Caruso (St. John's) led off with a strikeout swinging, but reached first on a wild pitch by Schooners starter Turnier. Caruso stole second and moved to third when Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) hit a ground ball to second base. Caruso scored on an RBI single by Blake Tiberi (Louisville) to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge.

Two innings later, Tiberi hit a solo homerun, his second long ball of the season, to give Vermont a 2-0 lead.

The Mountaineers scored their final run of the game in the seventh, when Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) was hit by a pitch. Amburgey stole second during Mike Krische's (Canisius) at bat. Krische followed with an RBI double to score Amburgey and give Vermont a 3-0 advantage.

The Mountaineers return to action on Monday night when they head to New Hampshire to take on the Laconia Muskrats. The first pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
