Wakefield, R.I. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a 3-2 10-inning decision to the Ocean State Waves on Sunday evening in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Old Mountain Field. The Mountaineers have lost in walk-off fashion in back-to-back games.
With the Mountaineers loss and Sanford's win over the Laconia Muskrats, Vermont now sits just one and a half games ahead of the Mainers heading into tomorrow's doubleheader, where the teams will square off in two seven-inning contests.
Pinch-hitter A.J. Ramirez (USC) smacked the game-winning hit in the tenth inning, an RBI single to left field, which scored Evan Ocello (Holy Cross) from third. Ocello led off the inning by reaching on an error. After Tim Lynch (Southern Mississippi) was hit by a pitch to set up first and second with no outs, Robby Rinn (Bryant) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. After an intentional walk of Drew Ferguson (Belmont), Ramirez came up with the winning hit.
Vermont struck first, scoring in the top of the second. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) led off with a walk. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) followed by reaching on a fielder's choice to set up man on first with one out. Two batters later and after Amburgey stole second and third, Evan Harasta (UAlbany) cracked an RBI single to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 edge.
Trailing 2-1 entering the sixth, Vermont tied the game. Nick Solak (Louisville) led off and reached on an infield single. Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) followed with a single. Solak moved to third on the play. Vigliarolo advanced to second on a wild pitch during Amburgey's at bat two batters later to set up first and second with no outs. Amburgey reached on a fielder's choice, setting the stage at first and third with one out. Solak was thrown out at the plate on the play. The next batter, Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) ripped an RBI single to score Vigliarolo and tie the game at two.
Steve Moyers (Rhode Island) started for Ocean State and went five innings. Moyers gave up one run on four hits and one walk. He struck out five.
Sam Spencer (Castleton) started for Vermont and pitched very well. Spencer dealt six and two-thirds innings, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks. He struck out two.
Oliver Powers (Radford) earned the win to move to 1-1 on the summer. Powers allowed no runs on a hit and struck out two over three innings of work.
Robert Strader (Louisville) took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season. Strader pitched two and two-thirds innings of relief and gave up one run on one hit and two walks, He struck out three.
The Mountaineers return to action on Monday afternoon, when they head to Maine to play a doubleheader against the Sanford Mainers. The first pitch of game one is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. The games can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
