Vermont Mountaineers News Release
The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Laconia Muskrats 7-1 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Robbie Mills Field on Wednesday night. With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 5-4 on the season.
Backed by strong pitching, the offense was the story of the game. Vermont leapt out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) started the inning off with a one out double to left field. Two batters later, with two outs, Adam Picard (UMass) hit an RBI single to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead. Mike Krische (Canisius) followed with a two-run homerun to left field over the mini green monster to open up a 3-0 Vermont lead.
Neither team would score again until the ninth inning, when Vermont scored four more times. Muskrats' reliever Adam Frank (Dartmouth) retired the first two batters of the inning, but the Mountaineers followed with a two out rally. Krische doubled down the right field line to kick start the offense. Josh Treff (Northeastern) drew a walk. Krische stole third during Brett Charbonneau's (Le Moyne) at bat. Charbonneau proceeded to drill an RBI double down the right field line to give Vermont a 4-0 lead and set the stage at second and third with two outs. Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) hammered a three-run shot to left field over the mini green monster to put Vermont up 7-0.
Laconia scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth. The Mountaineers have now outscored the Muskrats 12-1 in two games this season.
Dan Koger (Alabama-Huntsville) started in his first appearance for Vermont and got the win to improve to 1-0. Koger dealt five scoreless innings. He gave up seven hits,
no walks and struck out two.
Shea Spitzbarth (Molloy) took the loss for Laconia, moving to 0-1. He gave up three earned runs on four hits in six and one-third innings. He walked three and struck out eight.
In his summer debut, Dalton Goss (Alabama-Huntsville) pitched three scoreless innings of relief for the Mountaineers, allowing just two hits and one walk.
