Mountaineers Drop Hard-Fought Clash To Newport

Vermont Mountaineers News Release

NEWPORT, R.I. - A competitive battle between the Vermont Mountaineers and Newport Gulls was decided in the final frame, sending the Gulls to a 4-3 victory on Friday night at Cardines Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League play.

The Mountaineers took the early edge, with lead-off hitter Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) making his way to second before being driven home on a Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) line drive through the second base gap. Vermont nearly added to their advantage, getting both Robison and Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) in scoring position, but the Gulls promptly got the double play to extinguish the threat.

The Gull defense clamped down for the rest of the opening half as Dillon Brown retired twelve-straight Mountaineers between the first and fifth innings. Newport, meanwhile, swiftly gained the lead in the third after Justyn-Henry Molloy bombed one over the left-center field fence with Hudson Haskin and Brett Vosik on base.

Brown's streak came to an end at the hands of Sean Flaherty (Orangeburg, N.Y. / Hofstra University), who drilled his first homer of the season while facing a full count to cut into the Gulls lead. Vermont tied things up in the ensuing sixth frame after Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) and Robison found themselves on third and first on one out. The next at-bat by Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) led to a fielder's choice that got Robison out, but Newport's hopes to get the double play and close the inning were dashed when Charping was able to beat the throw to first, allowing McDermott to collect the run.

Both defenses revved up in the latter half as Ryan Steckline (Newark, De. / Monmouth University) and Sam Jacobsak embarked on a pitcher's duel. The Gulls finally broke through the deadlock in the closing inning, loading the bases on a fielder's choice, pass ball and a single. Facing just one out, the Mountaineers attempted to get the double play and force the game into extra innings, but a costly error at home plate allowed Colton Bender to make the game-winning run from third and give Newport the 4-3 victory.

Jacobsak earned the win after pitching a no-hitter in the final three innings of play, while striking out six of the nine Mountaineers faced. Steckline suffered the loss, allowing two hits and one run in just a little over two frames.

The loss drops Vermont to 20-16, and the team will resume their road trip tomorrow, Jul. 20, with a cross-divisional bout against the New Bedford Bay Sox in New Bedford, Mass. Opening pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
