Vermont Mountaineers News Release
OAK BLUFFS, Mass. - A hot morning at the plate, paired with timely answers, propelled the Vermont Mountaineers to a 6-4 victory over the Martha's Vineyard Sharks on Friday afternoon at Vineyard Baseball Park in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The pivotal win over the NECBL Southern Division-leading Sharks keeps the Mountaineers still in the thick of the playoff hunt. The team now sits just half a game back of the Keene Swamp Bats for the final spot in the Northern Division.
Both teams wasted no time getting on the board early, with the Mountaineers amassing two runs in the opening frame despite facing two swift outs. Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook University) made his way on base on a walk before Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) cleared the fence on the next at-bat to give Vermont the 2-0 lead. The Sharks cut the deficit in half in the bottom after a slick Alan Burnsed line drive to right field brought Matthew Chamberlain home.
The Vermont offense erupted in the fourth, tacking on three more runs to extend their lead. Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Hofstra University) kicked things off, making his way around to third before a Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) sacrifice fly gave him the opportunity to score. After Sean Flaherty (Orangeburg, N.Y. / Hofstra University) and Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) found themselves on base on the following at-bats, Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) plated both college teammates on a single.
Vineyard's Rudy Aguilar responded with his own sacrifice fly in the bottom to push Michael Knell home, but the Mountaineers neutralized the threat in the ensuing frame, picking up another run when a Goulard drive gave Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) supple time to make the dash home from second. The Sharks nearly mounted a rally in the bottom inning, picking up two runs behind a Jackson Raper single and an Anthony Videtto sacrifice fly. The Southern Division-leaders could not muster any more offense the rest of the afternoon, however, as the Mountaineers defense held firm behind a no-hitter from Nicholas DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J. / Stony Brook University) for the final two innings to close-out the 6-4 victory.
Alec Huertas (Bethlehem, Pa. / Long Island University) earned the win after five innings on the mound, allowing seven hits and four runs. Oliver McCarthy took the loss, giving up six hits and five runs in the opening four frames. DeGennaro got the save after striking out the final five Sharks to wrap-up the game.
The win pushes Vermont into the 20-win plateau at 20-15, becoming just the second team in the NECBL to cross the mark this season. The team will resume play this evening against another Southern Division titan, travelling to Newport, R.I. for a 6:35 p.m. tilt against the Newport Gulls.
You can follow all of the action online all season long on the NECBL Broadcast Network.
