Mountaineers drop game 13-5

North Adams, Massachusetts - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a 13-5 decision to the North Adams SteepleCats in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Friday night at Joe Wolfe Field. With the loss, the Mountaineers conclude the regular season with a 27-15 record, which ties the franchise mark for most wins in a regular season. The 2006 Mountaineers also ended the regular season with 27 wins.

After clinching first place in the Northern Division on Thursday night with a win over Sanford, Vermont elected to use some players in different roles in the regular season finale.

With a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning, North Adams pushed across six runs. It was a tough inning for the Mountaineers in the field, as they committed three errors, leading to two of the six North Adams runs coming across as unearned.

The Mountaineers managed just five runs on thirteen hits in the game. North Adams scored 13 runs on just eight hits. Each team made three errors in the field.

J.C. Cardenas (Barry) had three hits for the SteepleCats, including two solo homeruns to right field. He scored three runs in the game.

Ian Sagdal (Washington State) continued his hot hitting for Vermont, smacking three hits. Sagdal stroked two doubles and a single and had two RBIs in the game. Alex Caruso (St. John's) played his first game in a week and hit two singles in the contest.

Vermont starter Jordan Doyle (St. Petersburg) took the loss, moving to 1-2 on the summer. The right-hander pitched three and one-third innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on seven hits and two walks.

T.J. Hunt (Monmouth) tossed six innings for North Adams and earned the win to improve to 3-2 on the season. Hunt gave up two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers will have Saturday and Sunday off and will next be in action on Monday, when they play game one of the best-of-three Northern Division semifinals at Recreation Field.
