Vermont Mountaineers News Release
NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped a New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) contest to the North Adams SteepleCats, 8-4, at Joe Wolfe Field on Thursday night.
With the loss, Vermont falls to 5-4 on the summer. The SteepleCats improve to 6-4.
It was a very sloppy game on both sides, with the two teams combining for seven errors in the field.
North Adams scored six runs (four earned) in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. The first five SteepleCats hitters reached base safely without managing a hit. Four walks, a reach on error and a wild pitch led to a 2-0 lead for North Adams before the first hit of the game was recorded. The sixth hitter in the SteepleCats' order, Michael Babb (Jacksonville, Fla. / Jacksonville), smacked a two-RBI single to make it 4-0. Two batters after an RBI groundout by third baseman Chris Fornaci (Walnut Creek, Calif. / Pepperdine) made it 5-0, shortstop Jim Haley (Upper Derby, Pa. / Penn State) ripped an RBI double to cap off the six-run frame.
The Mountaineers received an RBI groundout by sophomore first baseman Austin Cangelosi (Orland Park, Ill. / Indiana) in the second, a two-RBI single by Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) in the seventh and an RBI base hit by junior Pat Madigan (Freeport, N.Y. / Northeastern) in the ninth.
North Adams tacked on single runs in the second and fifth innings.
Senior Garrison Banas (Hadley, Mass. / Bryant) started and took the loss for Vermont, falling to 0-1 on the summer. Banas did not retire any batters in the first inning and allowed five runs (three earned) on no hits and four walks.
Sophomore reliever Adam Seibert (West Chester, Pa. / Hofstra) was very strong for the Mountaineers in relief. Seibert pitched three innings and surrendered no runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out six.
North Adams reliever Robbie Buffis (Lanesboro, Mass. / Alvernia) earned the win to improve to 1-0. Buffis dealt two innings and gave up no runs, hits or walks. He struck out one.
The Mountaineers return to action on Friday night when they travel to Maine for a 6:30 p.m. meeting with Sanford. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
