Mountaineers defeat Sanford

Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Montpelier, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers defeated the Sanford Mainers 6-2 in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Friday night. The win snaps Vermont's two-game losing streak and Sanford's four-game winning streak. The win also puts the Mountaineers back atop the Northern Division standings by a game and a half, as they sit at 10-6.

For the third straight meeting between the two teams, the Vermont pitching was the story of the game.

Jim McDade (Millersville) started and dealt seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball. The right-hander walked just one and struck out four. He didn't have overpowering stuff, but located all of his pitches well, changed the eye levels of the Mainers batters and kept them off balance all night. McDade earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the summer.

Vermont's big offensive innings were the second and fifth. In the second, Casey Rodrigue (Indiana) led off with a double. Ryan Donovan (Hofstra) followed with a walk. Two batters later, Trey West (Le Moyne) walked to load the bases with just one out. After Alex Caruso (St. John's) grounded out to second to score Rodrigue from third and put the Mountaineers up 2-0, Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) hit an RBI single to score Donovan to make it 3-0.

In the fifth, Parenty and Trey Amburgey (St. Petersburg) led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but ended up on second and third as Parenty's aggressive baserunning paid off when he moved from first to third on Amburgey's hit. Amburgey moved up to second on the failed attempt to nab Parenty at third. Parenty scored on a wild pitch and Amburgey scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike Vigliarolo (St. Louis) to make it a 5-0 ballgame.

Ben Hall (Alabama-Huntsville) clubbed his first homerun of the season to right center in the eighth to give Vermont a 6-0 edge.

Sanford scored its lone two runs of the game in the ninth, but the Mountaineers lead was never in jeopardy.

Mainers' starter Bobby Ruse (Maryland) took the loss and fell to 0-2 on the season. Ruse allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks over four innings. He struck out three.

The Mountaineers return to action Saturday night at 6:30, when they host the North Adams SteepleCats for an NECBL contest at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
