Vermont Mountaineers News Release

Montpelier, VT - The tying run was caught in a rundown between third and home to cap off a wild back-and-forth game between the Vermont Mountaineers and the Winnipesaukee Muskrats Tuesday night in Montpelier.

Each team would score two in the first inning. The Mountaineers put together three straight hits with two outs, including back to back doubles from Nate Grys (Sterlight Heights, MI/ Western Michigan) and Ronald Medina (Bronx, NY/ Keystone), and single from Nolan Tressler (Statesboro, GA/ Georgia Southern), scoring two.

Vermont would add a run in the third and the fourth on two solo home runs from Ben Bavly (Newton, MA/ Northeastern) and Liam McGill (Wakefield, RI/ Columbia). For Bavly, it was his first of the year, and for McGill, his fourth.

Winnipesaukee's big inning game in the seventh, when they pushed three runs across on Vermont starter Jackson Shaver (Muskegon, MI/ Eastern Michigan) and reliever Levi Abrahamson (Mountain Home, ID/ Missouri Western).

The Mountaineers would start their comeback charge in the bottom of the ninth. Austin Masel (Stoneham, MA/ Holy Cross) would pinch hit, and send a one out fastball over the right field fence, pulling Vermont to only a one run deficit. Following a Samuel Duran (Melbourne, FL/ Nova Southeastern) walk, and an infield single from Bryce Kelley (Rockford, MI/ Michigan State), the Mountaineers had runners on first in second with one out. Bavly would ground a ball to second base, and the Muskrats would get the force at second for the second out. Duran took a big turn around third, slipped trying to get back, and was tagged out in a rundown to end the game.

Shaver took the loss for Vermont, going six and a third innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on 11 hits, while walking one and striking out five. The win for Winnipesaukee went to Al Wallach (Nahant, MA/ Framingham State), coming out of the pen for the Muskrats. The save went to TJ Stuart (Stratford, CT/ Manhattan), who threw two innings after Wallach.

Vermont (14-19) now drops to eight back of first place Valley (21-10), and five games back of third place Keene (19-14), who currently hold onto the third spot in the playoffs. Vermont travels down to Holyoke Wednesday to take on the Blue Sox. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30, and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240, or online via the NECBL Broadcast Network.
