Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Mountaineers could not put a stop to a hot night at the bats for the Winnipesaukee Muskrats on Friday evening, falling 9-6 at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League action.
The Muskrats got on the board early, piling on two runs to start the game off in the first frame. Tatem Levins drove in the first run on a single that fell between the left-center field gap, before Nate Vigeant added the second on a Michael Martinez RBI. Vermont immediately answered, getting the lead-off batter Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) home after Cam Climo (Billerica, Mass. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) struck one that just missed the shortstop and gave Gauthier a clean sprint home.
Winnipesaukee resumed their two-run outings, pouring on a deuce in the fourth after loading bases on three of their first four at-bats. Sam Cochrane sealed the deal, sending one past the mound and through the second base gap to bring in Jonathan Crimmin and Michael DeMartino and extend their lead to 4-1.
The Mountaineers promptly cut into the deficit in the bottom, opening the frame with a Climo double that bounced off the left field fence, before Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Fordham University) got him home with a single to center field. After the Muskrats were able to collect two outs, Vermont capitalized on a last-minute opportunity and were able to get Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University) around the bases before a wild pitch from Luke Torbert brought him in for the third run.
DeMartino wasted no time silencing the Mountaineers in the top of the fifth, drilling one past the right-field fence with Martinez on base. The visitors added a seventh run in the following inning on a Terence Norman single that allowed Cochrane to make the dash from second to home. Vermont could not contain Winnipesaukee's offensive momentum, giving up two runs in the seventh and eighth.
The Mountaineers, however, attempted to counteract with their own offense, accumulating three runs in the bottom of the eighth frame. Climo got the ordeal started on a drive to left field that brought Gauthier and Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) home, before Goulard was able to bring in Mountaineer-newcomer Ciaran Devenney (Manalapan, N.J. / University of Massachusetts-Lowell) in the next at-bat. Vermont could not amass any more, as the Muskrats defense held firm and collected the 9-6 victory.
Tyler Thorington (Woodhaven, Mich. / Western Michigan University) took the loss, surrendering seven hits and five runs in a little over four frames. Torbert earned the win for Winnipesaukee, allowing three hits and three runs in his five innings of play. Zachary Rodgers got the save, getting two strike outs in the closing stretch.
The loss drops the Mountaineers to 12-10 on the season. Vermont will look to right the ship with a huge in-state rivalry match-up tomorrow morning, Jul. 6, traveling to White River Junction, Vt., to take on the Upper Valley Nighthawks. Game four of the Governor's Cup will take place at 11:00 a.m.
