SteepleCats Play to the Crowd in Big 4th of July Win

July 5, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

On Independence Day there was a battle for control of the first place spot in the northern division. This would be the final start for Tyler Hays of the summer as he took the mound and had some trouble in the early going allowing 5 hits and 3 runs in the first. After that however Hays settled down and in front of over 2300 people pitched like the ace that he is, he ended the game with 10 strikeouts and his performance gave his offense a chance to get back into the game. The Cats scratched across a run in the 3rd and a run in the 5th, then in the 6th inning Brian Picone tied the game up on a two run double. Matt Koperniak had another fantastic game as he had two opposite field doubles and a single as well. The game was tied in the bottom of the seventh then Tre Kirklin got a chance to pinch hit with the go ahead runner in scoring position, he promptly came up with the biggest hit of his summer as he smacked a single down the right-field line to bring home the go-ahead run. Jacob Abbott pitched 7th and 8th innings to a tune of zero runs allowed, and with the one run lead still intact the mad man himself Madison Jeffery entered the game. After allowing an uncharacteristic lead-off walk Madison tallied a pop out and a couple of punch outs, the final one on a wicked breaking ball to shut the door and log another save. This win puts the Cats a game and a half up on Vermont now and the Cats will look to increase that divisional lead as they will host Ocean State tonight. A big win on the 4th in front of a packed house was quite a picturesque setting for this thrilling Cats win.
