Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers wrapped up the month of June with their eighth-straight victory, taking down the Sanford Mainers, 4-1, on Sunday night at historic Montpelier Recreation Field in New England Collegiate Baseball League play.
The Mainers encroached on Vermont's lead numerous times, but timely answers by the Mountaineers on both the offensive and defensive ends, along with a rare triple play, prevented Sanford from gaining any momentum.
The Mountaineers got their offense going on back-to-back one-run innings spanning across the second and third frames. Matt McDermott (Little Falls, N.J. / College of William and Mary) picked up the first RBI on a drive that got him out but gave Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) the opportunity to make it home. Austin Gauthier (Lorton ,Va. / Hofstra University) delivered the second score when an errant throw by Orlando Adams to Drew DeMartino at second, meant to get a streaking Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) out, soared over the second baseman's head and allowed Gauthier enough time to sprint home.
DeMartino promptly amended for the defensive errors in the fourth, popping one past the left field fence to cut into the Mountaineer lead. Sanford nearly capitalized on having two runners on base, but Vermont halted their advances on a triple play after a pop to center field got Shane Marshall out, followed by a wild heave that sailed over a leaping Gauthier and was picked up by Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook) who proceeded to pass it off to McDermott to get the second out, before tapping Connor Tate to complete the trifecta.
The Mainers almost got out of the bottom after collecting two outs with little issue, but Giordano made them pay on a double that bounced off the left field fence with Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Hofstra University) and McDermott on base, paving the way for them to make a clean dash and up the Mountaineer lead to 4-1.
After already having the start time pushed back an hour due to an intense rainfall earlier in the evening, heavy fog caused another stoppage at the conclusion of the sixth frame. Much like yesterday's road game at Winnipesaukee, weather got the better of the evening, resulting in the game being called as the Mountaineers claimed the 4-1 victory.
Sean Kealey (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Allegheny College) earned the win for Vermont, pitching just under six innings and allowing four hits and the lone Mainer run en route to striking out six. Brandon Backman took the loss, giving up two hits and four runs. Beau Keathley (Taylor, Mich. / Oakland University) got the save after collecting the final out of the sixth inning.
The Mountaineers now improve to 11-7 overall and move into a tie for first-place in the NECBL Northern Division, and will take their winning streak into a showdown against the two-time defending league champions tomorrow, Jul. 1, when Vermont hosts the Valley Blue Sox at 6:30 p.m.
