Big Win at Home Keeps Cats in First

June 30, 2019 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
North Adams SteepleCats News Release

SteepleCats vs. SwampBats In a game that would determine who would hold the first place spot in the division at the end of the night the SteepleCats came out of the gates swinging as they tallied two runs in the first and 4 runs in the second. The SwampBats had two of their own in the second to keep themselves in the game, but then another 3 runs in the 4th inning allowed the Cats to build a cushion and that would be all that Gordon Graceffo needed as he went 5 innings allowing only 3 runs. The offense was alive and well at The Joe as Matt Koperniak tallied two singles, two doubles and 5 RBIs on the nights for the local kid out of Trinity College. His teammate and fellow returned Joey Porricelli was on base 5 out of 6 times as well. Ben Shields pitched 3 scoreless innings of relief for the Cats and Jimmy Loper was able to get the final three outs of the ninth inning to secure the 11-5 victory. The SteepleCats are now 1.5 games above the SwampBats in the standings after the win as they are heading out to Martha's Vineyard today to face the Sharks. As the calendar flips to July we have a tight race in the Northern Division, but the Cats still remain clutching to that top spot as the back half of the season begins we will start to separate the wheat from the chaff as the race for the playoffs continues.
