Vermont Mountaineers News Release
Holyoke, Massachusetts - The Vermont Mountaineers scattered five hits over nine innings in a 6-2 loss to the Valley Blue Sox in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 2-3 on the season.
The night started off in a promising way with Vermont scoring immediately in the top of the first. Alex Caruso (St. John's) led off the game with a single. Jack Parenty (Stony Brook) followed with a bunt to move Caruso to second, but starting pitcher Zach Strecker (Kentucky) mishandled the bunt and Caruso moved to second with Parenty reaching on the error. Number three hitter Chandler Brock (Alabama-Huntsville) laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out. Blake Tiberi (Louisville) grounded out to short, allowing Caruso to score from third to give Vermont a 1-0 lead. The Mountaineers wouldn't score again until the ninth.
Vermont starter Ryan Davis (Le Moyne) had a tough outing. The left-hander threw 31 pitches in the first inning alone. In the second inning, with one out and the bases loaded, he was aided by an inning ending double play where second baseman and newcomer to the team, Ian Sagdal (Washington State), made a full extension dive to snatch a line drive. Sagdal proceeded to throw over to first baseman Tiberi to double up Michael Korte (Lipscomb) for the third out.
Valley broke through for three runs in the fourth inning. Storm Wilson (Kentucky) hit a one out single. He then stole second and third. Justin Morhardt (Bryan) followed with an RBI single to knot the game at one. After Joe Carcone (St. Rose) singled, Korte laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third with two outs. Angelo La Bruna (USC) crushed a two out two RBI double to right to give Valley a 3-1 lead.
The Blue Sox scored three more runs in the sixth on five hits to take a 6-1 lead before Vermont scored one in the ninth.
Davis went five and two thirds and allowed six runs on 11 hits. He walked three, struck out three and took the loss to move to 1-1 on the summer.
Strecker (1-0) got the win. He threw seven innings and gave up one unearned run on three hits and struck out five.
Tiberi and Rob Knightes (St. John's) led Vermont with two hits apiece.
Adam Picard (UMass), who didn't pitch an inning in college this spring, threw two scoreless innings of relief, including three strikeouts.
The Mountaineers have Thursday off and will return to action Friday night when they travel to eastern Massachusetts to square off with the Plymouth Pilgrims. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
