Mountain Lions QB Richard Bartel Joins Arizona Cardinals Active Roster
December 7, 2010 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Sacramento Mountain Lions News Release
Sacramento Mountain Lions quarterback RICHARD BARTEL has signed a contract with the National Football League's Arizona Cardinals, and has been added to their active roster.
Bartel served as the Mountain Lions' number two quarterback behind Daunte Culpepper throughout the 2010 United Football League season and when he saw action, completed 3-of-3 pass attempts for 29 yards and rushed once for two yards. Bartel signed with Sacramento on September 14, four days prior to the season-opener.
Under contract with the UFL until February 28, Bartel was subject to the UFL transfer fee, which was reduced to $25,000 to allow players the option of personally paying the amount in the event an NFL team would not make the payment.
During the Mountain Lions season, Sacramento offensive coordinator / quarterbacks coach Mike Kruczek said the team was lucky to have Bartel as its back up signal-caller.
"I think all coaches want someone behind the starter who is capable," Kruczek said. "A quality backup really gives us as coaches peace of mind. He has NFL experience, and that is a huge advantage."
Bartel came to the UFL after spending 2010 training camp with the NFL's Washington Redskins. He served as the Redskins' No. 3 quarterback for six games during the 2009 season, and also has been on practice squads with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns and Dallas Cowboys. Bartel was originally an undrafted free agent with the Cowboys in 2007.
Three UFL players have so far signed with NFL teams since the transfer fee was reduced - Bartel, running back Lorenzo Booker (Hartford Colonials to Minnesota Vikings) and defensive end Eric Moore (Florida Tuskers to New England Patriots). The $25,000 fees for those three players have been paid by either a personal player payment or a NFL team payment.
Michael Clayton (Omaha to New York Giants) also went directly to an active NFL roster but he wasn't subject to the transfer fee because he only played in four games for the Nighthawks.
Andrew Sendejo, who starred at safety for the Mountain Lions this season, is on the active roster for the Dallas Cowboys. He wasn't subject to the transfer fee because he was first signed to the Cowboys practice squad. Sendejo, who led the Mountain Lions with 48 tackles this season, was signed to the Cowboys active roster on November 29.
Sendejo, 6-foot-1 and 225 pounds, is a Texas native. He is a rookie from Rice University and had tryouts with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the New Orleans Saints prior to joining the Mountain Lions this year.
Former Mountain Lions, receiver ROD WINDSOR and defensive end/linebacker CURTIS YOUNG, are currently on practice squads in the NFL.
Windsor signed with the Cleveland Browns on November 30 while Young signed with the Green Bay Packers on December 1.
Windsor played all season for the Mountain Lions, who finished the 2010 campaign with a record of 4-4. He led the team with three touchdown receptions, was second in catches (25) and second in receiving yards (379).
Windsor, 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, also played in the Arena Football League in 2010 (193 catches, 2,372 yards, 47 touchdowns for the Arizona Rattlers). He caught 81 passes for 1,118 yards and six touchdowns as a senior at Western New Mexico State after serving as the team's quarterback as a junior (led team in passing and rushing yards).
Young was with the Mountain Lions for one game, the season opener at Hartford on Sept. 18. Young, 6-foot-1 and 270 pounds, is a rookie from the University of Cincinnati.
The UFL season came to a close on November 27 as the Las Vegas Locos beat the Florida Tuskers 23-20 to win the championship in Omaha, Nebraska.
