Florida Tuskers News Release
ORLANDO, FL - TUESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2010 - Florida Tuskers running back Dominic Rhodes, who set United Football League records for rushing yards and touchdowns in 2010, is headed back to the NFL. On Tuesday, Rhodes signed a contract with the Indianapolis Colts. He was placed on the active roster and could see action on Thursday night against Tennessee.
"Playing for the Tuskers was an awesome experience for me," said Rhodes. "It was what I needed. It was definitely a blessing. The Tuskers and the UFL gave me the opportunity to get back in the NFL."
Rhodes set an UFL rushing record this season with 547 yards in eight games. He led the league in rushing touchdowns (9), total touchdowns (10) and all-purpose yards (918). He was third in the UFL in yards from scrimmage (652) and second in kickoff return average (21.7). Rhodes scored at least one touchdown in each of the first seven games of the season and was in the running for the UFL Offensive Player of the Year award won by Sacramento Mountain Lions rusher Cory Ross.
His 60 points led all players (non-kickers) by 30 points. His totals were even more impressive as he started the season third on the depth chart behind Aveion Cason and Maurice Hicks.
Rhodes had three 100-yard rushing games for the Tuskers this fall: 103 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries in Week 4 at Hartford, a team-record 111 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries in Week 8 at home vs. Omaha and 102 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries in Week 9 at home vs. Hartford. In the 2010 UFL Championship Game, which the Tuskers lost 23-20 to the Las Vegas Locos on Nov. 27, Rhodes ran 20 times for 67 yards and caught four passes for 29 yards.
"Dominic is certainly deserving of this opportunity," Tuskers Head Coach Jay Gruden said. "He was always the first person on the practice field and the last person off. He dedicated himself totally to football this year and it showed on the field and he certainly earned this opportunity to get back to the next level."
Prior to joining the Tuskers, Rhodes spent eight seasons in the NFL. He spent the majority of that time with the Colts (2001-06, 2008) and also played for the Oakland Raiders (2007) and went to camp with the Buffalo Bills (2009). For his career, he has amassed more than 3,100 rushing yards in the NFL with 26 touchdowns. He has more than 7,000 all-purpose yards and 32 touchdowns.
Rhodes top season in the NFL came with the Colts in 2001 when he rushed for 1100 yards as a rookie and totaled more than 1,600 all-purpose yards with 10 touchdowns. In 2006, Rhodes rushed for 641 yards and five touchdowns while splitting time with rookie Joseph Addai, but came up huge in the Super Bowl -- rushing for 113 yards and a touchdown in the Colts 29-17 win over the Chicago Bears.
With the signing, the number of Florida Tuskers joining the NFL has climbed to four. Defensive tackle Eric Moore is on the active roster of the New England Patriots; while fullback James Develin and linebacker J Leman were signed to the practice squads of the San Diego Chargers and Cleveland Browns respectively.
