Arkansas Travelers News Release
SPRINGDALE, ARKANSAS - Second baseman Ryan Mount led a four home run attack with a pair of dingers (3) as the Arkansas Travelers won their second straight game, 8-7, over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. The Travs scored seven runs on homers as Mount twice smashed two two-run homers while Efren Navarro (1) and Paul McAnulty (5) each hit one long ball. The Naturals mounted rallies late in the game to inch within one run, but Amalio Diaz left the bases loaded in the eighth inning before saving the game (2) with a perfect ninth.
The Travs split the four-game series at Northwest Arkansas to bring their record to 6-10, while the Naturals fall to 9-7.
Making his fourth start, right hander Tim Kiely (2-2) allowed a run in each of the first and second innings before holding the Naturals scoreless for three innings.
Naturals starter Everett Teaford (3-1) set down the first eight Travs batters, four on strikes. Clay Fuller was the first Trav to reach base with a two-out single in the third. He swiped second base and scored when Andrew Romine bounced a single to left field. Mount crushed the next pitch over the fence in right-center giving the Travs a 3-2 lead.
Mount faced Teaford again in the fifth inning with two outs and homered to right scoring Alberto Rosario for a 5-2 advantage. Teaford left the game after the fifth surrendering a season-high five runs on six hits and a walk in his first loss.
Louis Coleman took over in relief for NWA in the sixth and surrendered a two-out walk to Julio Perez. Then Navarro walloped a two-run bomb to center for his first RBIs of the season and a 7-2 lead.
Kiely came back for the sixth and retired the first two batters before allowing a double by Anthony Seratelli and an RBI single by Paulo Orlando. Right hander Taylor Wilding relieved and gave upa run-scoring triple to Derrick Robinson before getting Johnny Giavotella to line to Mount for the third out.
Wilding made it through the seventh only after giving up two more runs, on two-out base hits by Kurt Mertins and Nick Von Stratten to bring the Naturals within a 7-6 deficit.
McAnulty's home run, his fifth during an 11-game hitting streak, came in the eighth inning off Brandon Sisk pushing the lead to 8-6.
The Naturals loaded the bases against Ryan Aldridge in the eighth inning with one out on a bloop single and two walks before he got a bouncer to the mound and a force out at home. But he walked Manny Pina forcing in a run, and the call went out for Diaz. He got an inning-ending bouncer from Mertins on one pitch to quell the threat.
Diaz made quick work of the last three hitters in the NWA lineup getting three groundouts on seven pitches to save the club's second win in a row.
Time of game was 3:07 and the paid attendance was 4,274.
The Travs head home for an eight-game home stand beginning Monday with the Tulsa Drillers.
