Springfield, MO - The Cardinals returned home to begin an eight-game homestand at Hammons Field on Monday starting with the Northwest Arkansas Naturals.
After two scoreless innings, the Naturals struck first against Cardinals' starter Nick Additon in the 3rd inning. With one out, Mike Moustakas was hit by a pitch and Clint Robinson doubled to put runners at second and third. Nick Van Stratten then grounded out to bring home Moustakas before Jeff Howell connected for a two-run homer to put the Naturals up 3-0.
The Cardinals offense was quiet until the bottom of the 5th when Aaron Luna connected for his second home run of the season, a solo shot to cut the deficit to just two runs, 3-1.
Nick Additon would last six innings in his start allowing the three runs on seven hits while striking out four. Tom Eager came in out of the bullpen in the 7th and allowed a lead off single before yielding a two-run homer to Jeff Howell, his second of the day, to put Northwest Arkansas up 5-1. The Naturals would add another run in the 8th against Eager as Johnny Giavotella delivered an RBI single to give Northwest Arkansas a five run lead, 6-1.
Springfield would scratch out another run in the 8th as Aaron Luna walked and Curt Smith doubled before Colt Sedbrook hit a rocket off the pitcher's body for an RBI groundout to make the score 6-2. Northwest Arkansas would win by that final score.
Springfield will continue their four game series against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals Tuesday. The Cardinals will send right hander Gary Daley (2-0) to the mound against left hander Edgar Osuna (2-1) of NW Arkansas. Game time is scheduled for 7:10pm.
