Morimando Guides Mudcats Past Dash

Zebulon, N.C. - Shawn Morimando held the Winston-Salem Dash to one hit over five innings, and the Carolina Mudcats beat the Winston-Salem Dash 5-1 on Friday night at Five County Stadium. The Mudcats improved to 4-0 against the Dash at home, and 16-30 overall.

Morimando (2-5) earned his first win since April 18th. The left-hander walked two, and struck out five.

Ryan Buch (0-1) took the loss for Winston-Salem (23-22). The right-hander surrendered four runs, two earned, on five hits over 4.2 innings. He walked three, and struck out two.

Tyler Naquin got the scoring started in the Mudcats' first. The center fielder doubled, and scored on a groundball chopped up the middle by Jordan Smith.

Carolina added to the lead in the second when Joe Sever scored on a double by Ryan Battaglia, coupled with a throwing error by right fielder Mark Haddow. Battaglia scored on a single by Yhoxian Medina for a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Naquin set the table, again, with a single. After a walk of Luigi Rodriguez, Smith into what appeared to be a double play. However, the throw from shortstop Chris Curley sailed, and Naquin scored on the Dash's second error.

Winston-Salem broke up the shutout attempt against reliever Michael Goodnight with a run on two hits in the sixth. However, Joey Wendle belted a towering shot off the high scoreboard in right field for a 5-1 lead.

The Dash managed to put the tying run on base in the ninth, scoring two, but Jeff Johnson induced a fly-out to center by David Herbek to end the game.

The Mudcats go for the series win against Winston-Salem Saturday night at 6:15 p.m. It is Military Appreciation Night at Five County Stadium.
