Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
With the Albuquerque Isotopes 2011 season concluded, the Los Angeles Dodgers have called up three ¬ËTopes, as outfielder Jerry Sands, right-hander John Ely, and catcher Tim Federowicz are set to join the Dodgers during their series in Washington, D.C. Tuesday. Along with reliever Ramon Troncoso, who joined the Dodgers on Sunday, as well as starting pitcher Dana Eveland and infielder Russ Mitchell, who both went up last week, a total of six Isotopes have been summoned to Los Angeles since Major League rosters expanded on September 1.
All of the players are returning to the big leagues except Federowicz, who is making his Major League debut. After being traded to the Isotopes from the Double-A Portland (ME) Sea Dogs in the Boston Red Sox organization as part of a trade deadline deal that sent outfielder Trayvon Robinson to the Red Sox and eventually the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Erik Bedard, Federowicz was excellent in his Triple-A debut, batting .325 with seven doubles, six homers, and 17 RBI in 25 games. The University of North Carolina alum's first three hits at the Triple-A level were all homers.
Sands returns to the Dodgers having hit a team-high 29 home runs with the ¬ËTopes while batting .278 with 21 doubles, three triples, and 88 RBI in 93 games. Sands got especially hot the season concluded, belting a PCL-high 11 homers and driving in a league-high 33 runs in the month of August. This will be the outfielder's second stint with Los Angeles this year, having made his Major League debut with the Dodgers on April 18. Sands spent the better part of two months with Los Angeles before he was optioned back to Albuquerque on June 9, batting .200 with 10 doubles, two homers, and 17 RBI in 41 games.
Ely also is making a return to the big leagues after posting a 7-8 record with a 5.99 ERA in 25 starts with the Isotopes in 2011. On May 22, Ely authored one of the best performances by a ¬ËTopes hurler all season, tossing a nine-inning complete-game 3-1 win over the Reno Aces. The right-hander made a start for the Dodgers on April 10 at San Diego and also made his first career relief appearance at any level with three innings of work at Cincinnati on June 5, his only two previous appearances with L.A. this season.
Troncoso is also no stranger to the Major Leagues, having already pitched in 13 games over two stints this year, compiling an 0-0 record with a 5.89 ERA. In his last stint with the Dodgers, from May 19 to June 22, Troncoso posted a 3.68 ERA in 10 appearances. The right-hander was a stalwart out of the ¬ËTopes' bullpen, going 2-5 with a 5.05 ERA in 35 games for Albuquerque.
With the latest additions to the Los Angeles roster, a total of 19 different players, including Major League rehabs, suited up for the Isotopes and Dodgers throughout the 2011 season.
The Isotopes' 2011 season is over, but that doesn't mean there won't be more baseball this year in the Duke City. The Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game comes to Albuquerque on Tuesday, September 20, pitting the winner of the Pacific Coast League playoffs against the playoff winner in the International League in a one-game, winner-take-all showdown. In addition to the game, there will also be a pre-game autograph session with Dodgers legends Steve Garvey, Ron Cey, and Bill Russell, a fleece blanket giveaway courtesy Sandia Resort, and a post-game fireworks extravaganza. Tickets may be purchased at the Isotopes Park Box Office, at Ticketmaster outlets, by phone at 1-800-745-3000, or on-line at www.albuquerquebaseball.com or www.ticketmaster.com.
