Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release
SAN ANGELO, TX - For the third time in four nights, the Dogs played 10 innings. And for the third time in four nights the Dogs lost in 10 innings. Foster Field continued to serve as a house of horrors for Abilene as they fell to The Colts for the 10th time in 12 meetings in San Angelo, 3-2.
With his team trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, Colts' eighth place hitter Ryan Hutson, with San Angelo down to their final strike, found a way to loop a double down the left field line, scoring Jason Crosland from first and tying the game against Kevin Gelinas in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Gelinas, appearing for the fifth time in six nights, allowed Crosland to lace a one-out single through the middle and struck out Jamar Walton on four pitches leading up to Hutston's gamy- tying double.
After Erik Draxton breezed through a perfect top of the 10th, Gelinas returned for his second inning in the bottom of the 10th. The rookie struck out Ronnie Gaines but allowed J.J. Sherrill to bang a double off the base of the left-center field fence. While facing Daryl Jones, Gelinas threw a pair of wild pitches - the first allowing Sherrill to reach third and the second allowing him to score the winning run.
Brian Henschel could not have been more dominant over the back half of his outing on Monday night. The 35-year-old righty retired the final 16 batters he faced and struck out the side in the eighth inning. Henschel pitched nine innings, allowed four hits, two runs (one earned), and struck out a season-high nine batters.
Geraldo Valentin was the only Abilene hitter to break through against the veteran. The scorching hot righty launched a solo homer to left in the second inning and doubled in the fourth. After his fourth inning two-bagger, Valentin scored when third baseman Jason Crosland committed a throwing error with two in the inning.
Matt Larkins made his second professional start for Abilene and fired six innings, giving up eight hits and just a single run. However, after Jamar Walton doubled to start the bottom of the seventh, catcher Davis Page visited the mound along with both the coaching and training staff. Soon after, Larkins walked off the field without throwing another pitch.
In a supremely pitched game, there were no walks allowed.
It was the first of another eight-game series between these squads. Game two will take place back at Foster Field on Tuesday night. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
