Corpus Christi, Texas: August 18, 2004 â The Corpus Christi Rayz have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with forward Blair Stayzer, Rayz General Manager/Senior Vice President Larry Linde announced Wednesday afternoon. Stayzer is a young player who is expected to bring more toughness to the Rayz lineup.
Just a week after the signing of hard-nosed, rookie, Britt Dougherty, the Rayz once again added grit and muscle to their lineup. Stayzer, 23, has spent most of his four-year career in the ECHL, while appearing briefly in the American Hockey League for during the 2001-02 season. Stayzer stands 6' 3" and weighs 225lbs. and is best known for his punishing style of physical play. He spent the last season and a half with the Roanoke Express and tallied 28 points and 214 penalty minutes in 70 total games for Roanoke.
"Blair is a strong kid who works extremely well in the corners and will open up the ice for our skill players," said Rayz Head Coach Ken McRae. "He helps us solidify a versatile team that will consist of skill, size, toughness and character. Blair is a proven player with tremendous potential, and I look forward to seeing what he can bring to Corpus Christi."
Stayzer, originally from Dunnville, Ontario, was a seventh round pick of the Calgary Flames in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. In 2000, Stayzer began his professional career with the Johnstown Chiefs. Since then he has increased his point total from the prior year and recorded over 100 penalty minutes in each season. Stayzer becomes the thirteenth player signed by the Rayz this summer.
The Rayz will begin the 2004-05 season in Austin on October 22nd, and host the Laredo Bucks in the first ever event at the AmericanBank Center on November 5th and 7:05pm.
