Halifax Mooseheads News Release
The Halifax Mooseheads had the red light busy on Sunday afternoon in an 8-5 win over the Moncton Wildcats as Jordan Dumais and Josh Lawrence paced the attack with two goals and one assist each.
The latest victory improved Halifax's record to 48-10-4-3, giving the team 103 points to surpass the 2018-19 Mooseheads as the second-best record in franchise history. Only the 2012-13 Memorial Cup Champion squad had more points with 120. The victory at least temporarily puts the Moose back on top in the QMJHL standings ahead of Quebec. The Remparts were also underway in action on Sunday.
13 different players found their way onto the scoresheet for the Herd with goals also coming off the sticks of Evan Boucher, Reece Peitzsche, Attilio Biasca and Mathieu Cataford. Defenceman Etienne Morin had a big afternoon for the visiting Wildcats with two goals and two assists. The 52nd of the season for Dumais held up as the game-winner to give him 12 game-winning goals this season which ties a franchise record with Jason King and Ramzi Abid for most in a single season. He is also now sitting on 130 career points which is seven behind Abid for most points in a single season by a Mooseheads player.
Mathis Rousseau earned his 35th win between the pipes and also recorded an assist when he played the puck ahead on the Biasca tally. Other assists went to Brady Schultz 3, Alex Doucet 2, Jake Furlong, Owen Phillips, Brody Fournier, David Moravec, Markus Vidicek, Dumais, Lawrence and Biasca.
Moncton started strong and opened the scoring on a Yoan Loshing goal just 1:59 into the contest, before many of the 9,626 fans at Scotiabank Centre had even made their way to their seats. Boucher evened things at 1-1 when he deflected a Brady Schultz point shot about three minutes later but it wasn't long before the Cats reclaimed the lead on the first of two goals by highly touted NHL Draft prospect Etienne Morin. Mooseheads rookie Reece Peitzsche finished off a solid shift by bullying his way to a goal during a mad scramble in front of Moncton starter Vincent Filion. Halifax took a 3-2 lead to the dressing room thanks to Josh Lawrence who buried his 44th of the season at the 17:07 mark.
The second period belonged to the Mooseheads as they put on a show with four goals to open up a 7-2 advantage. Moncton got one back courtesy of Charles Beaudoin late in the period and it was 7-3 through 40 minutes of play. Dumais scored both of his goals in the middle frame while Lawrence's second of the day also came during the second period on a gorgeous shorthanded strike. Cataford got the eighth of the day for Halifax in the third period while Moncton tacked on two more near the end to make it an 8-5 final score.
With three points on the day, Josh Lawrence reached the 300 point plateau for his QMJHL career.
There was a fair share of penalties handed out to both sides with 64 combined penalty minutes including four misconducts in the third period. The Mooseheads will continue their homestand at Scotiabank Centre to close out the regular season this week when they host Charlottetown on Wednesday night at 7pm in the make-up game from the Hurricane Fiona postponed home opener, before Cape Breton visits on Friday at 7pm and the Islanders return once more on Saturday at 4pm.
