Halifax Mooseheads News Release
The Halifax Mooseheads secured their eighth victory of the young season on Saturday night on home ice with a 5-1 defeat of the visiting Val d'Or Foreurs. First star Lou Levesque scored once and added an assist while goalie Mathis Rousseau continued his stellar play with 28 saves to give the Herd back-to-back wins on home ice.
More than 7,700 fans inside Scotiabank Centre gave Rousseau a huge cheer when he was announced in the starting lineup, one night after he scored the first goal by a Mooseheads goalie in franchise history. While he didn't score in Saturday's game, he was a huge factor in running Halifax's record to 8-3-1 through 12 games which puts the team second overall in the entire QMJHL, and one point back of Baie-Comeau.
Rookie Lou Levesque could hear the fans chanting "Louu" throughout the night as he dazzled with his speed and skill. The 17-year-old forward opened the scoring in the game when he buried a backhand shot on the power play just 2:46 into the contest. Foreurs rookie Philippe Veilleux tied the game 1-1 in the second period with his first career tally but it was all Mooseheads on the scoresheet after that.
Overage forward Brody Fournier put the Herd in front to stay just 28 seconds after the Veilleux goal when he darted down the wing and beat goalie Emile Beaunoyer with a top corner snipe. Fournier leads the QMJHL with four game-winning goals. Markus Vidicek kept the pressure coming and made it a 3-1 lead just a few minutes later and Beaunoyer got the hook after three goals on just eight shots. Mathis Lussier took over and stopped 15-of-17 shots the rest of the way.
Halifax's fourth goal was a coast-to-coast beauty by defenceman Owen Phillips who took from behind his own net and weaved his way through a sea of white Foreurs jerseys before neatly tucking one over the goal line. The Moose got another one from a blueliner in the final minute of regulation when David Moravec lit the lamp to make it a 5-1 final score.
Mathieu Cataford picked up a pair of assists while Levesque, Moravec, Liam Kilfoil, Jordan Dumais, Reece Peitzsche, Dylan MacKinnon and Jack Martin had the other assists. Halifax went 1-for-3 on the power play and finished the weekend homestand 4-for-8 with the man advantage.
The Mooseheads are back on home ice on Wednesday night at 7pm when first overall pick Caleb Desnoyers and the Moncton Wildcats visit for the first time this season. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca.
