Moose Finish Regular Season In First

Manitoba Moose News Release


The Manitoba Moose finished their 80 game regular season in Week 27 with a 50-23-1-6 record and 107 points for first place in the North Division, Western Conference and the entire AHL. This is the best the team has ever finished in the club's 14-year franchise history in overall wins, points, road wins and goals against. The Moose can now focus on their first-round playoff opponent, the Toronto Marlies. The Moose-Marlies series gets underway Wednesday, April 15th at the MTS Centre.

Moose Notes

EXTENDING THE SKID TO FOUR: By dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the Marlies on Friday night, the Manitoba Moose extended their losing streak to four consecutive games, the longest such streak this season. Previous to this loss, the Moose had only experienced four three-game losing streaks so far this campaign. The club's longest losing streak in franchise history was eight games from Jan. 25 - Feb. 11/01.

RARE FOURTH PERIOD FLOP: Entering Friday night's overtime period against Toronto, Manitoba was a perfect 4-0 so far this season in extra-time. However, the Moose dropped their first fourth period loss in almost a full calendar year. The last time the Moose lost in regulation time was April 12, 2008 when the club dropped a 3-2 overtime decision in Grand Rapids. However, in their first round of last year's playoffs, the Moose misfortune continued as all four defeats to the Syracuse Crunch came in OT.

Wednesday, April 8, 2009: Manitoba 2, Hamilton 6

Though the Manitoba Moose kept grasping at a comeback, the Hamilton Bulldogs converted an early two-goal lead into a 6-2 victory Wednesday night at the Copps Coliseum. Manitoba allowed three powerplay goals and one shorthanded goal in their first Wednesday night loss this season. Guillaume Desbiens and Pierre-Cedric Labrie scored for the Moose while Hamilton's Max Pacioretty led all skaters with three points.

Friday, April 10, 2009: Manitoba 3, Toronto 4 (OT)

The Manitoba Moose dropped their sixth consecutive game to the Toronto Marlies on Friday night in a 4-3 overtime decision at the Ricoh Coliseum. Jason Jaffray, Michael Grabner and Raymond Sawada scored the trio of goals for Manitoba while Tim Stapleton handed Manitoba their first overtime loss this season with his fourth period marker.

Saturday, April 11, 2009: Manitoba 4, Lake Erie 1

In their final game of the 2008-09 regular season the Manitoba Moose finished on top of a 4-1 decision against the Lake Erie Monsters in front of 17,627 fans at the Quicken Loans Arena. Taylor Ellington and Nolan Baumgartner scored singles for Manitoba while Michael Grabner notched a pair to bring his total to 30 goals this season. Curtis Sanford stopped 22 of 23 shots in the clubs 50th victory this campaign.

Upcoming Opponent

The Manitoba Moose embark on the 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs when they take on the Toronto Marlies in Game 1 of the North Division Semi-Finals on Wednesday night at the MTS Centre. The Moose accumulated a 2-4-1-1 overall record against the Marlies this regular season.

Player of the Week Nominee

Michael Grabner

For the third time this season, Moose winger Michael Grabner has been nominated for AHL Player of the Week. Grabner appeared in all three games the team played this week and recorded his 28th, 29th, and 30th goals of the season, as well as one assist...After being shutout on Wednesday night, Grabner put the Moose in a two-goal lead on Friday night with his 28th goal of the season. He also earned the helper on the third goal which would force overtime against the Marlies. On Saturday night, Grabner notched two goals to tie the team-high 30 goal count this season. Grabner now has four points in his last two games. He also leads the Moose with 238 shots, eight game winning goals and was +2 this week to leave him +22 overall.
