Houston Aeros News Release

The 2009 Calder Cup Playoffs begin this week and Houston will be making their seventh appearance in eight seasons in the AHL. After a tight divisional race that came down to the final weekend, the Aeros came out with the No. 3 seed in the West Division and will face the No. 2 seeded Peoria Rivermen.

The Aeros will head to Peoria to play Game 1 of the division semifinals Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. CDT at Carver Arena. Game 2 is slated for Friday night, a 7:00 p.m. contest at Carver Arena. The best-of-seven series will then return to Houston for Games 3, 4 and, if necessary, Game 5 with dates and times at Toyota Center to be announced soon. Visit AEROS.com throughout the week as more information and special multimedia pieces are posted.

Houston and Peoria's only post-season meeting prior to this year was the 2006 playoffs when the Aeros swept the Rivermen 4-0 in the first round. Houston had the home-ice advantage and won the first two in overtime at Toyota Center. The Aeros outscored the Rivermen 19-10 in the series to move on to face Milwaukee in the Division Finals.

During the regular season Houston posted a record of 4-3-0-1 against the Rivermen with a total of three games decided in shootouts. Peoria outscored the Aeros in the season series 24-23. Despite being outscored, the Aeros recorded 46 more shots in the eight games totaling 223 to 177.

Tickets for the Aeros home playoff games 'A' and 'B' are on sale now as well as playoff series packages which are discounted off single game prices. Call the Aeros front office at (713) 974-PUCK to get your tickets today.

In Houston's 15 year history they have reached the "second season" 13 times and won championships twice. The Aeros won the IHL's Turner Cup in 1999 when they defeated the Orlando Solar Bears and took the series to seven games. Houston won the Calder Cup in 2003 when the club defeated the Hamilton Bulldogs, also in Game 7.

WEEK IN REVIEW

Houston finished the final week of the regular season with a 1-1-1 record for three standings points, enough to earn the No. 3 seed in the West Division. The Aeros clinched a playoff spot Friday with an overtime loss to the Rampage. The teams met again Saturday in San Antonio where the Aeros lost but returned to Houston for a 6-4 win in the season finale on Sunday. Krys Kolanos (pictured) netted a total of five goals in the home contests to earn AHL Player of the Week honors.
