Manitoba Moose News Release
In their third game in three days, the Moose showed no signs of exhaustion as they soundly defeated the Providence Bruins 4-0 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center on Sunday afternoon. This is the 14th consecutive game that the Moose have earned a point on the road, tying the franchise record. Defensemen Shaun Heshka and Maxime Fortunus along with forwards Guillaume Desbiens and Jason Krog scored for the visitors while Cory Schneider stopped 23 shots for his fourth shutout this season.
Manitoba benefited from the game's first powerplay when Adam McQuaid was penalized for high-sticking at 3:01. With one second remaining in the man-advantage, Shaun Heshka found the back of Tuukka Rask's net to put the Moose up by one.
Tempers flared between rough-and-tumble players Tommy Maxwell and Brad Marchand, who decided to tango on the visiting blue line. After several rights and lefts, Marchand fell to the ice and both players were handed five-minute fighting majors.
At 14:35 Michael Grabner's high-sticking call put Providence on their first five-on-four, but despite racking up five shots the Bruins couldn't beat goaltender Cory Schneider in the short two-minutes.
The Bruins received their second powerplay 3:06 into the second period, courtesy of a hooking penalty to Dusty Collins. Manitoba's penalty killers, first overall on the road, stifled all opposing opportunities and play returned to five-on-five.
At 14:17, Guillaume Desbiens and Jeremy Riech got into a short tiff resulting in individual five-minute fighting majors, with an additional two minutes to Desbiens for roughing. Manitoba cleared the puck on two separate occasions and let the penalty expire without any adjustment to the score.
On the powerplay for the fourth time, the Moose were able to extend their lead and score their second unanswered goal when Maxime Fortunus wired the puck into the net, 2-0.
6:34 into the third period, a defensive breakdown in the Bruins zone allowed Guillaume Desbiens to net his 15th of the season, his tenth point in his last ten games, for a three goal lead.
After back-and-fourth play for the remainder of the final frame, the Bruins failed to get on the board and Jason Krog netted a fourth in the final minutes to confirm the victory, 4-0.
LOOKING AHEAD
For the first time in six games, the Moose will play within their division when they visit Grand Rapids on Friday night.
