Montville Blasts Two, Mainers Still Lose

Newport, EI - The Sanford Mainers fell on Sunday in Newport, losing 5-3 against the Newport Gulls. The loss drops the Mainers to 19-21 on the season with two games scheduled for Monday.

The first run of the game scored for the home team in the second inning. Eric Johnson singled to lead off the inning and scored on a Riley Reynolds double to right field to make it 1-0 Newport.

The Gulls added to their lead in the third. Matt Foat singled and advanced to second when Tim Kiene was hit by a pitch. Johnson singled to load up the bases before Jeff Mellilo doubled home two runs to make it 3-0 Gulls.

Sanford got their first run of the night courtesy of the long ball. Michael Montville led off the fourth and homered to center to cut the Newport lead to 3-1.

In the fifth Newport scored again. Conrad Gregor doubled and advanced to third on a Foat groundout. Kiene hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Gregor and make it 4-1 Newport.

The Gull scored again in the sixth. Mellilo singled and advanced to third on a Tom Richards single. Richards advanced to second on the throw to third. Jack Reinheimer grounded out to short to drive in Mellilo and make it a 5-1 Gulls lead.

In the eighth the Mainers got their final runs of the game, again courtesy of Montville. Marlon Calbi walked and advanced to second on a Justin Leisenheimer groundout. Montville came up and crushed a pitch over the fence in left to make it 5-3 Newport, the final score.
