Montreal Canadiens Officials Visit St. John's
March 31, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release
Danny Williams, President and CEO and Glenn Stanford, COO of the St. John's IceCaps, hosted eight senior members of the Montreal Canadiens organization today. Among the Canadiens officials who made the visit to St. John's were Owner, President and CEO Geoff Molson, General Manager Marc Bergevin and COO Kevin Gilmore.
Earlier this month, the Montreal Canadiens announced that starting in the 2015-16 season, St. John's will be the new home of the Canadiens' American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate team. As part of the agreement, Mr. Williams will lease the franchise from the Canadiens organization. This was the first opportunity since that official announcement for the Canadiens brass to meet with IceCaps officials, corporate partners, city councillors, other dignitaries and local media.
"The city of St. John's, and indeed the whole province, is still abuzz with the news that the iconic and legendary Montreal Canadiens hockey club will be our new franchise partner," said Mr. Williams. "We are extremely pleased to welcome Mr. Molson, Mr. Bergevin, Mr. Gilmore and other senior officials and give them a glimpse of what makes St. John's such an extraordinary hockey town. Fans are full of excitement and anticipation for the upcoming season, and I have absolutely no doubt the team will be welcomed with open arms by the community at large. We have proven to be an outstanding marketplace within the AHL and we look forward to working with the Canadiens organization as we develop these young NHL prospects."
Following the welcome ceremony, Canadiens officials will tour Mile One Centre, which will house the team in the coming seasons.
