Montanez Leads Iowa Past Memphis

MEMPHIS, TN - Iowa topped Memphis 12-8 at AutoZone Park Monday night.

The Redbirds jumped out to an early 4-0 lead before Iowa scratched out a couple of runs to close the gap to two with a pair of RBI-singles in the fourth inning. However, Luis Montanez and Brad Snyder pushed the Cubs past the ‘Birds 5-4 in the fifth with back-to-back home runs. The Redbirds answered back in the bottom of the frame with a two-run single by Ramon Vazquez.

Memphis starter Raul Valdes was replaced by Pete Parise in the sixth where he walked in the Cubs' first run on the inning while Montanez again drove in two runs with a double to left field while Brad Snyder grounded out to second base sending Fernando Perez home. The ‘Birds attempted to comeback once again in the sixth with Pete Kozma's RBI-single and Nick Stavinoha's double, but they came up short.

Jason Buursma headed to the mound for the Redbirds next, giving up a run in the seventh and two more in the eighth putting the I-Cubs up 12-8 on the night as Cory Rauschenberger threw a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Iowa starter Robert Coello earned the win with five innings of work. The right-hander allowed six runs on seven hits for his second win of the season. Pete Parise took the loss giving up four runs on three hits and walking two across 1/3 of an inning. Esmailin Caridad notched his second save for the Cubs working around three walks in the ninth.

The Redbirds and I-Cubs play tomorrow morning at 11:05 a.m. Lance Lynn gets the early call for the home team and will face Iowa righty Jay Jackson. Tomorrow the University of Memphis's College of Education and the Redbirds teamed up to promote education through baseball. 50+ schools and over 9,000 children are signed up to attend.
