Iowa Cubs News Release

Memphis, TN - Lou Montanez had four hits, including three doubles and a home run, to lead the Iowa Cubs (10-8) to a 12-8 win over the Memphis Redbirds (6-12) at Auto Zone Park tonight. The Cubs had lost the first two games of this series, but now seek a split with a win in the finale tomorrow morning.

The Redbirds built a 4-0 lead through three innings against Cubs' starter Robert Coello before the Cubs got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. Montanez started the rally with a double and scored on a two-out hit by Welington Castillo. Scott Moore and Marquez Smith followed with base hits of their own to produce a second run to cut the Redbirds lead in half.

The Cubs took the lead for the first time in the top of the fifth. With two outs, Fernando Perez singled and Montanez homered off Redbirds' starter Raul Valdes to tie the game. It was his third homer of the year. Brad Snyder followed that up with a solo homer for the Cubs' first back-to-back shots of the season and a 5-4 lead.

The Redbirds took the lead back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-run single by Ramon Vazquez. The Cubs struck right back to take the lead for good in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, reliever Pete Parise walked Perez to force in the tying run before Montanez doubled again to drive in two for an 8-6 lead. Parise gave way to lefty RIch Rundles and Snyder capped the rally with an RBI groundout.

The Redbirds answered back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and had the bases loaded when Polin Trinidad caught Vazquez looking at strike three to end the threat. Vazquez argued the call with home plate umpire Kellen Levy and was ejected from the game.

The Cubs added another run in the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single by Bryan LaHair. The Cubs scored their final two runs in the eighth off Jason Buursma. Montanez and Snyder opened the inning with back-to-back doubles and Snyder scored later on a sacrifice fly by Scott Moore.

Esmailin Caridad finished the final three innings in relief and earned his second save of the season. He walked three, including two in the ninth, but induced a pair of double play balls in his outing. Coello (2-2) was charged with six runs on seven hits in five innings and got the win. Parise (0-1) suffered the loss.

The Cubs and Redbirds wrap up this series tomorrow morning at 11:05 pm at Auto Zone Park. RH Jay Jackson (1-0, 3.60) will start for the Cubs against RH Lance Lynn (1-2, 2.66) for the Redbirds. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the Safeco On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 10:45.
